    SNIP

Some Americans are unfortunately afflicted by hoplophobia, the unnatural fear of guns, which causes them to lose all common sense in public policy discussion about the right to bear arms. This fear may or may not be treatable by gun range therapy and other measures.

But a new phobia that has arisen over the last few years that afflicts some elected officials: pistolgriphobia, the unnatural fear of pistol grips on otherwise ordinary long guns.. . .

Ooooooo. Another money-making opportunity for psychiatry.

I know for a fact that this disorder isnot listed in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual)

Hopefully, Dr. Mike and I can get this before the committe, get it voted on as a new disease, and get a number assigned to the disease (for convenient insurance billing) right away.

(Note:I am not a psychiatrist, nor do I play one on TV.However, I have beenknown to make jokes at their expense.)
I'll make you an offer: I will argue and fight for all of your rights, if you will do the same for me. That is the only way freedom can work. We have to respect all rights, all the time--and strive to win the rights of the other guy as much as for ourselves.

If I am equal to another, how can I legitimately govern him without his express individual consent?

There is no human being on earth I hate so much I would actually vote to inflict government upon him.

maybe someone should call Merck or one of the other drug companies, they could make something to cure it that ONLY causes heart failure or anal leakage, either way it gets the hoplophobes out of our way.

Mike wrote in his new column:

The term "assault weapon" is a pejorative term for otherwise ordinary rifles and shotguns apparently pushed by Brady Campaign spinmaster Josh Sugarman ...
Josh Sugarmann (correct spelling) is the Executive Director and founder of the Violence Policy Center (VPC). He was never "spinmaster" for the Brady Campaign.

Your columns would be much more potent if they were error-free.

Please do a better job of fact-checking and proofreading.

Otherwise, another great column worth reading.

I will fix the spelling but Josh is or was on the Brady Campaign Board of Directors and I think very accurate to say he is one of the brady community's more effective spinmasters.

Anyone who still actually 'n voluntarily resides in DC or the Maryland side of the Potomac is pretty much three bricks short of a load 'n shouldn't own guns in the first place.

The Brady Campaign apparently does not make it easy to see who their Directors are.

    The NRA is helpful, though:

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (BCPGV)

    Board of Directors:

    David Birenbaum
    Carl Bogus
    John Corderman
    Lee Fisher
    Larry Lowenstein
    John Phillips
    Helen Raiser
    Maurice Rosenblatt
    Jeanne Shields
    Odile Stern
    Edward O. Welles

As you can see, Josh is not listed. He could have been a director in the past.

Further down, though, is this entry for the VPC:

    The Violence Policy Center (VPC)
    Headquarters: 1300 N Street, N.W.
    Washington, DC 20005
    (202) 783-4071

    http://www.vpc.org

    Executive Director: Josh Sugarmann
    Of Counsel: Kristen Rand

The Violence Policy Center is the new name of the New Right Watch (NRW), a non-profit group that "researched" what it perceived as a new right-wing American political movement. NRW focused its attack on semi-automatic firearms with two releases: "Assault Weapons and Accessories in America" (1988), a joint effort with EFEHV, and "Assault Weapons: Analysis, New Research, and Legislation" (1989). Funding for New Right Watch was received from individual and foundation grants.

VPC is a non-profit national "educational" foundation that proposes firearms restrictions, including total handgun prohibition, as measures to reduce violence in America. VPC's Executive Director, Josh Sugarmann, formerly the Executive Director of the New Right Watch and, previously, with the National Coalition to Ban Handguns, authored a book attacking the NRA -- NRA: Money, Firepower, and Fear (1992). In 1997, VPC produced a report attacking NRA's Eddie Eagle program, calling it "Joe Camel with feathers". This attack was so scurrilous that many in the media denounced it. It stands as clear evidence that VPC is more interested in attacking NRA than in finding any rational or effective solutions to violence in America.

    Pfffft. Laymen.

Just hook up 4 electroshock machines in series andfry 'em into a seizure. Write it down as aversion therapy. Send the bill to the insurance company. Go play golf.

Are you messing with me? Mental health is one of the most short changed and underfunded areas in the medical field. Mental health centers are not funded like hospitals unless they actually have a psych facility, which in itself is not even worth the price of running one. Everyone tells me where I work a psych facility is a drain on money and there is no beneficial income which comes out of it. Basically such a unit is just a blackhole where you throw your money.

You can thank medical insurance, medicare, medicaid, and the state where you live for short changing mental health centers and psych facilities.

Maybe once Obama starts his socialist medicine plan...

I wasusing humor on Mike's spin about an invented phobia.

I don't want to take this any further off topic on Mike's thread, so I'll only be making this one post in reply and go no further.

I wasn't baiting you.Your profession is not relevant to me on a gun forum.

However, you're barking up the wrong tree to try to get sympathy from me on lack of funding for psych's.

Maybe if they ever actually cured anybody, or were known to be successful at curing people, they might find people more willing to contribute to them.

Nevermind that no field should be "funded". If they can't earn a freaking living providing a valuable service, why should they be "funded?"

Of course insurance companies are reluctant. What does one expect? A profession that invents "disorders" at an amazing clip. A profession that declares everyone has some mental illness. What insurance company in its right mind would insure people where the doctors find everyone is a patient?

Also, nevermind the goofy studies done atNIMH and universities. The effect of sexon hamster brains, etc.

I reserve the right to satirize, criticize, and bashany profession with the dismal track record psychiatry does.
