Just got back from Academy Sports where I OC'd and after 15 minutes of being in the store an employee asked if I was an LEO and I told him no then he said "Well ok, I'm gonna have to stick around while you're in the store" so I said "fine with me", now I have a personal store guide ;)

A few minutes later two or three employees approached me and aske the question of am I an LEO and that if I was I needed to be displaying a badge. I said no I'm not, then he said he was going to have to ask me to put my gun in my vehicle. I asked if there was a store policy and he said yes,he asked if I had a permit to carry concealed and if I didI should do so. I said "no I don't" and he gawked like whoa, what are you doing carrying that thing openly. I followed with, "Sir it is legal to open carry in Louisiana" and he said oh ok. I then told him that they needed to have the proper signage up to notify customers. I will add the gentleman was very polite but other than that he was misinformed on Louisiana Law.

I don't believe he was management and did not want to press as I was on my lunch hour. Anyone aware of Academy's policy?

Edit* - I did post the location in the subtitle...LAFAYETTE

So has anyone managed to find out if an actual store policy banning OC actually exists or was this just a case of another misinformed store employee talking out his butt?

Standing up for a right is not always going to be pleasant, cordial, non-confrontational, etc. Giving up your right to OC just to get along isn't protecting anything. You either have a right or you don't. There's no middle ground. Get used to it.
SOMEtimes, you just have to take a stand. If Academy doesn't want anyone OC'ing in their store, leave and don't go back. Tell others about how you were treated, ask THEM not to go there, either.
If Academy makes the decision to post their entrances "no firearms," it's their loss.
There are PLENTY competitors who DO want your money.
Shop them, instead.

Academy has been against OC for at least the last year that I have been OCing. Aside from the one time at Wal Mart, it is the only place that management has had an issue with OC.

I tried to OC at Academy twice, both times was asked to leave by manegement and did so. Now I only shop there as a last resort. Last time I went I was looking for holsters for the HK USP Tacticool and ammo to go shooting that week since nowhere else near me had holsters or .45 ammo.

I know if you buy a gun there they hold it and walk you OUTSIDE the store with it.

When i got my P22 I thought about strapping it on, and saying, oops, I forgot to get some plastic worms.

The only problem is that Academy, like Wal-Mart, has blown away the competitors with underpricing at first, then fix pricing when the others are closed. A local shop just closed it's doors here in West Monroe. Now, only Academy is left here, save the pawn shops and the like. If I cannot find another local supplier, I guess I will have togo online, or travel somewhere. Does not do much good for my community or my neighbors.Uphill is a tough battle, but can be won.

As the old saying goes, "it's easier to go along and get along."
Well, look around. THIS is what happens when most people choose to
take the easy way out vs doing what is right.

Just to deprive Louisiana of sales taxes, I quite often order stuff online from out of state, no sales taxes. ANYthing you want to buy, you can buy online/over the phone, most cases cheaper, too.
Send Academy a message, show the a copy of your receipt, show them you CAN buy elsewhere.

So do Wal-Mart, Gander Mtn., Bass Pro, and Cabela's. I don't know about Dick's or Big Five; I don't have any experience with them, but I suspect they are the same way.

I read a rather hilarious report one time by a fellow who had to be escorted out of Wal-Mart ("sorry, it's just policy!"), with the manager carrying his new shotgun. Even though he pointed out that he was openly carrying a pistol and several reloads on his belt, their policy required the manager to carry it out and place it in his trunk.

And so they did. In the trunk of his marked police cruiser, while he stood there in full police uniform. :banghead:

That is "ONE" of the reasons I HATE Walmart. Walmart has put more people out of business than any other organiztion on the planet.

Every chance I get, even if it cost a little more, I buy my groceries from Mom and Pop stores, and I shop ANY WHERE I can besides Walmart.

I hope I live long enough to see Wally World Crumble beneath it's greedy fat ASS !!

It's funny what people tend to ignore: when Wal-Mart "jacks up prices", the new prices are never as high as the mom-n-pop stores charged before Wal-Mart came to town. (The threat of competition is just as real a market force as actual competition; if Wal-Mart were to leave their prices too high, a competitor could easily snag that business.)

Businesses thrive where there's a Wal-Mart. How healthy is business in towns where there is no Wal-Mart? Talk about a dead depressed economy! (Exception granted for towns where the hoity-toity crowd have outlawed competition and can afford to pay the resultant artificially inflated prices.)

New businesses spring up around every Super Center. When people save a bunch of money on the generic pedestrian goods that are exactly the same whether you buy them at Wal-Mart, Target, or Bob's Corner Store, they can be more discretionary with their, errr, discretionary spending. Niche, boutique, and specialty stores do well at offering things that Wal-Mart doesn't.

I was born in a small town of 4,000; when I was 10, we near a town of 5,000 about 40 miles away. Both towns have Wal-Marts (originally small stores, now Super Centers). In both of these small towns in rural Arkansas, there is active and healthy competition for groceries, prescription drugs, sporting goods, guns and ammo, durable home goods, and clothing. The most successful competitors aren't even really "competitors"; they focus on things that aren't worth Wal-Mart's time and trouble, for which smaller stores can offer better flexibility.

If an economy can't support more than Wal-Mart, the problem isn't Wal-Mart.

And I have seen the opposite. Every place I have lived, after mom and pop were gone, the prices were always Higher than when they first moved in. I worked at a grocery store while in high school. The prices there I knew well. After I went in the Navy, I was happy to see Sam's. I got paid every 2 weeks, and could buy 2 week supplies at Sam's, cheap. After all others were out of business, prices crept up exponet... exponitia.... Alot!.

I shopped in the Baton Rouge Segan Lane Acadamy for about 20 minutes yesterday. No problems. I was wearing my Bersa .380 in it's holster on my right hip and it was probably not seen by most of the employees. I didn't make a point of turning it toward anyone so it may have slipped under the radar so to speak.

I'm all over it.
UPDATE: don't waste your time dialing that number.
You will get, yep, an automated machine, offering you numerous choices, none of which apply to you or I.
Worse yet, hitting 0 will NOT get an operator.
The ONLY thing you can do is hit one of the non-applicable choices, explain to him/her why you're calling, LEAVE YOUR NAME AND NUMBER AND WAIT.
Does this remind anyone of calling a government agency?
Not for me, thank you.
Guess I need to buy that Remington 870 Express anywhere but Academy.
