This topic came up in the topic CaCop put up as Goodbye and I put this scenario forth.

I have some good 911 calls and some bad ones as clips at the end. Then 2 videos that are just good videos. You are the dispatcher, you make the call.

9-11 Operator:9-11 is this an emergency?

Citizen:Oh my god, there is a man with a gun at the local gas station.

9-11 Operator:What is the man doing?

Citizen:I don't know, guns scare me. Just send the cops to protect me.

9-11 Operator:Unit 1 man with a gun at Gas Station.

Officer: Am I responding to a robbery or what?

So then I get this...

Someone calls 9-11, the cops have to respond. No they don't, would they have responded to the changed scenario I posted above? Can you imagine what would happen if we left the decision to respond in the hands of a short telephone call with a dispatcher who knows very very little about the law? Cops don't respond to every call that come is.
I agree but where do we really draw the line? Would you put your life in the hands of a dispatcher or your family's life? I would love for every law abiding citizen to be armed and be able to protect themself but let's say your 12 year old daughter is at the gas station from the first part of this post; should the cops respond to check out the guy with the gun and make sure your daughter is safe since you aren't there?
It helps if you pause a few of the videos within the first few seconds and make your decision as most of the calls go on for several minutes.

Arm yourselves but let the police do their job. Give them a break and hope they respond to help your 12 year old daughter from the deranged rapist with a gun in front of that gas station.

Perfect example of an appeal to emotion falacy! It shouldn't matter if the person carrying the gun is in the premature baby ICU at the local hospital. Rights are rights and the bystander's age and gender have nothing to do with the logic behind it.

I don't have children, but I have a 14-yr-old sister I'm rather fond of.

The job of police is to investigate criminal activity, not bring peace of mind to hoplophobes at the cost of personal liberty for the rest of us.

I'll say it again: I think that dispatchers should screen 9-1-1 calls, but police should respond if the caller insists. In cases where the caller is abusing the 9-1-1 system, they should be the ones the cops investigate, not the peaceful, innocent bystander.

Having the police harass every person with a gun will undoubtedly prevent some crimes... so would door-to-door searches of homes and random vehicle inspections on the street. The bottom line is that our country was founded on liberty, not safety.
