OC'd at Cabela's today with Tygereye. We called ahead to see if they had the Lee Hand Press in stock. They did, a kit for 35 bucks, so we made the trip down. When we arrived, I waited for her to load and holster before we went inside. I didn't take my coat off until we were between the two sets of entrance doors. Once we were in, we were both plainly openly carrying. When I called, the guy I spoke to (Jesse) told me he would put the press behind the counter at the customer service desk, so we went there.
While we waited for the one person in line in front of us, quite a few people and several employees walked by without incident. When we arrived at the counter, we found out that Jesse had not given him the press, so we asked how to get to the hunting counter. We walked through half the store to another counter, where an older guy (who plainly noticed I was carrying) helped us find Jesse. He had just taken off somewhere, so another fella helped us out.
I got the press, and started asking questions. He was very friendly, and obviously in a good mood. We all wandered over to the reloading section, where he helped try to locate what I was looking for. He also noticed I was carrying. We finished up, I thanked him for his help, and Tygereye and I went to the gun counter to look at one of my objects of gun lust, a Ruger Vaquero in .45 long colt.
While we were standing there, one of the guys behind the counter said to Tygereye, "Ma'am, you're gonna have to cover that up". She didn't say much, so I told him "she can't cover it up". He just looked at me, muttered something under his breath like "open", then walked away. Once we got help at the counter, I looked at a really nice little bird's head grip SAA .45 with a 4 inch barrel. I loved it. Then the guy looked at me and asked "do you have a cpl?".
I said "yes, I do".
He said "you're making a lot of people around here nervous".
I asked "has someone complained?".
He replied "no, I can see eyes".
I didn't know what to say to that, and as it turns out, I didn't have to reply anyway. Right then, 4 or 5 employees all walked out of the back room, and the guy (1) helping me stood up straight. A couple others came up behind us. We were literally surrounded. Guy 1 said "you know, when you get your cpl, you have to keep it covered."
I said "Actually, that's not true." They were all suddenly quiet, a sort of shocked quiet." A lot of instructors teach that but..."
He interrupted me and said somewhat loudly " I'm telling you, you need to cover that up or leave!"
Guy 2 pipes up at least as loudly "It's corporate policy to not allow open carry in our stores!".
Me : " I'm under the impression that corporate policy is to follow state law"
Guy 2: "No, it's not!"
So, here we are, with merchandise laying on the counter, and browsing revolvers, surrounded by mildly hostile employees. They are clearly not interested in making any sales. Tygereye said "fine, we'll take our business elsewhere". I looked at the guy in front of me, pushed the stuff across the counter to him, turned and asked Tygereye for my coat, and we walked out, heads high. I never once raised my voice, I was calm and non-confrontational. It should be noted that prior to going to the gun counter, everyone was very helpful, and there were no issues. No scene was made until the gun salesmen decided to make one. I'll be composing a letter to corporate shortly, then I'll act on the information I receive. Until then, I won't be back.
