"colored gentleman" - It takes some contortions to turn that into a derogatory or racist remark. I have heard similar phrases with no racism or disrespect ever intended or implied over my life that it didn't even register with me.

As to the rest of the OP, I found it humorous and non-problematic.

OLD DOGS AND CHILDREN AND WATERMELON WINE
Tom T. Hall

"How old do you think I am," he said?
I said, well, I didn't know.
He said, "I turned 65 about 11 months ago."

I was sittin' in Miami, pouring blended whiskey down
When this old gray, black gentleman was cleaning up the lounge.

There wasn't anyone around, except this old man and me.
The guy who ran the bar was watching Ironside on TV.
Uninvited, he sat down and opened up his mind
On old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

"Ever had a drink of watermelon wine," he asked.
He told me all about it, though I didn't answer back.
"Ain't but three things in this world that's worth a solitary dime,
But old dogs and children and watermelon wine."

He said, "Women think about they-selves, when men-folk ain't around.
And friends are hard to find when they discover that you're down."
He said, "I tried it all when I was young and in my natural prime,
Now it's old dogs and children and watermelon wine."

"Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes.
God bless little children while they're still to young to hate."
When he moved away I found my pen and copied down that line
About old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

I had to catch a plane up to Atlanta that next day.
As I left for my room I saw him picking up my change.
That night I dreamed in peaceful sleep of shady summertime,
Of old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

I don't recall any crying about racist terms when the song first came out years ago. Additionally, I interpret "old black gentleman" as describing someone who may or may not be well heeled but who has the dignity of someone who knows how to behave, someone with a reasonable view of life; a gentleman.

MD

P.S. I tried to upload an mp3 of the song but it was too big (5.75MB).

I think everyone who has posted in this thread should all get together for an OC lunch some weekend. Then we can all hash this out in person. That would be interesting.... :what:

We already have a place to meet, Wendy's in Fife. Now we just need a time and date...
I'll bring the color

6 days since the last post, it was well on it's way off the main page..... Thanks for bringing it back.
I'm angry that I missed it.
You and I should have a big dust-up over your bringing it back just to complain about it. We can each post every other day and keep it on the front page forever. ;)

That should be lots of fun and very productive, just like the rest of the thread. :banghead:

Don't worry, someone besides us will start posting eventually. I like how everyone glossed over the fact that he was acting like a dick. Thanks for giving a good impression of gun owners!
