Well - so we decided we kinda like to eat, and being an avid open carry person (although just newly a member on here) we decided to go to one of the bigger Price Choppers close to our house *Yes we live in the 'ghetto'*

So as usual - I put on my trusty XDM paddle holster etc.

But anywho, we grab a cart, walk over the the lotto ticket machine (IN FRONT OF THE SECURITY GUARD) - get some tickets - mozy through produce (scratching our tickets and getting some veggies, make it through the 'fresh meat section' (after placing our order so the person behind the counter that doesnt speak very good english finally gets it correct)..

Then on to cereal.. Yes the wife loves it so it's on the list.. Next thing you know i see the security guard walk by our isle, then not 30 seconds later the cop shows up pulls his badge and starts asking questions..

The first was "Who are you, which i clearly told him Bryan", and then he explained that I'm a nobody, and asked if I had a CCW, which I told him I did not - because frankly I was not concealing my weapon (except for a little bit that might have been hidden from a fat roll).. I'm carrying a Full Size XDM - not one you really 'hide', nor do i have any intentions to hide it..

After we establish that I do not have a CCW - i was told that there is a City Ordinance for Grandview, MO prohibiting open carry.. (Oh great..)

So he asks me to hand over my gun - and being the 'good citizen' i am, he then takes my locked and loaded gun, and carries it 1/2 way through the store to the 'security' office, where he then decides to unload it.

(A few jokes aside - as i'm not real fond of glocks *which is what he had* - and me telling him not to fondle mine too much or he'd fall in love. (AND me showing him how to unload it)

'Detains' me for a good 15 minutes, while he calls the PD to run my name, and run the serial number of my pistol, then says since he's being 'nice' - he's going to escort me out to my car so i can put my gun away, and I can then finish shopping.

Anywho we finish shopping - and go out to the car for the nice fresh grandview air.. Mmmm BLUNTS! (But no - i'm the bad guy because I like to excersize my right to have MY gun)..

I really only had one comment to the cop - Bad guys dont wear holsters.. (I realize thats not always true) but someone intentionally not trying to hide it - isnt the person they should be bothering..

For me - No more Grandview Price Chopper..

The only thing is - i come home, and start going through municipal codes for KC, Grandview etc - and i dont find ANYTHING stating open carry is illegal per any city ordinance. (Sec 17-41) in Grandviews that pretty much says the same as the state law for Unlawful use of *

Could someone point me in the right direction? Was this guy blowing smoke up my rear - or do i need to just give my business to KC instead of going 5 miles south.

Yes I would have to agree that the police would need the education. Since they are 'off duty' working there as security or something. However on todays to do list (since i scoured the city ordinances and was unable to find anything saying contrary to the state laws, I was planning on calling either the officer that gave me grief (or) the city PD and trying to find out which ordinance he was trying to say I was in violation of.

Update:

Earlier I called the Grandview PD - and left my name / number etc - so that a 'supervisor' could call me back.

I ended up speaking with a Sergeant - very nice guy, and simply put, he said he had NO CLUE what the price chopper cop was thinking and or trying to quote. He clearly stated that there was nothing wrong with what i did etc.. The 'only' thing that could've even come into question was the way i had my shirt, only about 90% of my pistol was exposed.. He said 'technically' that was ok as well - but 'borderline' concealed if the officer was,, hmm how do i put it.. Being a jerk..

He did say 'of course' that PC could ask me to not carry - but they have no signs, and 'THEY' didnt seem to have any problem, it was the Off Duty working for a few extra bux that seemed to have a cob up his rear.

It's ok though - i'll be printing out some of the No Guns - No $ cards, and make sure I go back to fresh meat as soon as I walk into the store - so that if it happens again, it can sit in the cart and rot as I promptly walk right out of the store - and the 3-400$+ a month I spend on groceries there can go to another store that doesnt have a problem with it.

well done.... I would have asked for his Sargent to be present when he ordered the weapon if he was off duty then he shouldn't have the authority LOL "power" to take it

Just my 2 cents hope you guys like the OC map I have not had many comments on it

When I went through the academy (8 yrs ago) they used to and i'm sure still do have it where 'private' companies can hire the officers on their days/time off.. So I would assume thats probably what he was doing. (And it pays pretty well actually).

I would have to agree with you - and should something like this come up again - I will be better prepared. BUT - when an officer flashes a badge and reaches to his mid back paddle, i'm not real sure of what his intentions were. I honestly wasnt expecting it - as i have been in the store many times, with no problems. Heck my roomate went there a little bit ago - same 'security' guard, and no problem. (Maybe they didnt like my holster?) It's the factory XDM paddle holster - that covers up well the trigger guard and breech. My roomate carries a M&P in a full holster, and it's black, where mine is Stainless..

Really thats all i can think? Maybe mine was too big and pretty and drew too much attention / no clue.. I tend to be a bit rebellious - which is why I decided to go on to law school instead of being an officer myself, and the only thing I could think of was 'heh' i guess i need new Stainless 500SW to carry, but then again i'd probably just get more confrontations.

Your OC map is GREAT - we must give props on that one, it is a shame to look at the Kansas Side and see how much their regulations and laws effect the 'law abiding' citizen.. But then again (thats why I refused to buy a house in KS, and instead bought one in MO)..
