I just got this in an e-mail concerning concerning Cabelas corporate policy on firearms. ENJOY!!

    Mike,
    Here’s the statement:

Customer Open-Carry and Concealed-Carry of Pistols and Revolvers in Cabela’s Retail Stores

Cabela’s company policies are intended to be aligned with applicable federal, state and local laws. Accordingly, each store location has adopted policies to comply with the laws governing the state, county and city in which the store is located.

With respect to the issue of open-carry and concealed-carry of firearms by customers – it is Cabela’s general policy to allow customers to carry a pistol or revolver within Cabela’s stores if the customer is permitted to do so in accordance with applicable law; provided such firearm remains safely holstered while the customer is on Cabela’s property, and the activities of the customer do not raise safety concerns or otherwise interfere with Cabela’s business activities.

If a customer brings a firearm on Cabela’s property for purposes of repair, appraisal, evaluation, sale or any other purpose that will require the customer or someone else to handle the firearm or remove the firearm from a holster, the firearm must be checked in with store personnel, safely unloaded and fitted with a trigger lock.

Cabela’s supports responsible gun ownership and is committed to providing a safe family shopping environment. Accordingly, Cabela’s reserves the right to implement firearm safety procedures within its stores as Cabela’s deems appropriate.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Interesting, if true.

Well then, I hope it is true.
I've been sending email after email to Cabela's and damned if I can get a straight answer out of them on this very issue.

Your post shows the kind of response I was looking for: to the point with no dancing around about state laws and local managers.

I've OCed in Cabela's several times. Never had a problem. Glad to see the memo though just to clear things up.

The good news gets better. I sent Mr. Arterburn a note thanking him for his clarification and suggested it would be a good idea he clearly communicate that policy to all employees to avoid the sort of inconsistent responseOCers tend to get there, as well as Walmart (which has a similar corporate policy for their retail locations.)

A few minutes later I received this response:

    John,

I was cc’ed on an email going out today to all retail locations which should be a good start of the process of communicating this policy to all employees. Hopefully, we can close the cracks through which such things sometimes fall.

Thanks for your note. It is appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    Joe

Since I had been engaged in a tug O war with Cabela's customer service over the issue of customers carrying firearms in their stores, I too sent a message to Mr. Arterburn about the email being attributed to him. I also made a point of thanking him if it was true.

I got a very quick response:

Yes, I sent that statement when it was clear we were not communicating the policy accurately throughout the entire company. We are taking additional steps to communicate it companywide so there are no misunderstandings.
Thanks for contacting us. And, sure, spread the word. And let me know if anything else pops up.
    Sincerely,
    Joe

Cabela's will henceforth start getting my business again.

Thanks XD-GEM for cross posting the info to this forum!

I wish we could get this cleared up with Walmart and Bass Pro.

Both tell me that it's against their policy but can't show me the damn policy

It's already cleared up with walmart. Contact their corporate people, their security director will stomp on the local managers if they're setting policy not in accordance with state and local laws. If OC is legal where you are, it's fine with walmart corporate policy. If you poke around the forums a bit you'll find the link to contact the aforementioned security person directly. I'll see if I can find it, but don't have a whole lot of time at the moment, so no promises.

Great news about Cabela's though. They're a nationwide company, might be nice to put this in the general forum. I don't shop at my local Cabela's for just that very reason-that they prohibit OC.

Edit: I can't find it right now, only the local idaho regional security person. Anyhow, here's a link to their corporate contact page, perhaps you can get in touch with them through the chain there. http://walmartstores.com/7663.aspx If that doesn't work, do a search of the Idaho forum for "walmart" (not hyphenated) and you'll find the info for Toni, who might be able to put you in touch with the person in your area. Good luck.
