    Looking to drum up support here in Hawaii to get the firearms laws changed here in the Aloha State. We are falling behind the rest of the country (including California).

    If you are coming to Hawaii in the near future, or are already a resident here, sound off here. And most importantly, spread the word about the conflicting laws here, the proposed changes, and finally, lets try to gather more members here.

    Count me in, I have been in Hawaii for about seven years. The gun laws, one reason among many that someday will drive me back to the mainland, but until then!!

    I used to live in Hawaii plan on retiring back there someday. And I visit family often, so definatley would like to see some improvement to Hawaii's anti-gun laws.
    I am not anti Cop I am just pro Citizen.

    Aloha from Maui, everyone-count me in!!

    Been here 20+ years, only getting active in shooting recently after a long hiatus.

    Glad to see an interest--what's the story on any plans for concealed carry here?

    Hawaii already has a concealed carry policy, and open carry is illegal. But the statute states that the Chief of Police "may-issue" at his own discretion.

    ยง134-9 Licenses to carry. (a) In an exceptional case, when an applicant shows reason to fear injury to the applicant's person or property, the chief of police of the appropriate county may grant a license to an applicant who is a citizen of the United States of the age of twenty-one years or more or to a duly accredited official representative of a foreign nation of the age of twenty-one years or more to carry a pistol or revolver and ammunition therefor concealed on the person within the county where the license is granted. Where the urgency or the need has been sufficiently indicated, the respective chief of police may grant to an applicant of good moral character who is a citizen of the United States of the age of twenty-one years or more, is engaged in the protection of life and property, and is not prohibited under section 134-7 from the ownership or possession of a firearm, a license to carry a pistol or revolver and ammunition therefor unconcealed on the person within the county where the license is granted. The chief of police of the appropriate county, or the chief's designated representative, shall perform an inquiry on an applicant by using the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, to include a check of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement databases where the applicant is not a citizen of the United States, before any determination to grant a license is made. Unless renewed, the license shall expire one year from the date of issue.

    (b) The chief of police of each county shall adopt procedures to require that any person granted a license to carry a concealed weapon on the person shall:

    (1) Be qualified to use the firearm in a safe manner;

    (2) Appear to be a suitable person to be so licensed;

    (3) Not be prohibited under section 134-7 from the ownership or possession of a firearm; and

    (4) Not have been adjudged insane or not appear to be mentally deranged.

    (c) No person shall carry concealed or unconcealed on the person a pistol or revolver without being licensed to do so under this section or in compliance with sections 134-5(c) or 134-25.

    This is SPECIFICALLY what needs to be changed here. But we need a lot of support. Just gonna take some time. Stay tuned and get your friends on here. This IS unconstitutional and must be changed.

    I spend much of the winter in Maui ~ I also have land on the Big Island which would be suitable for a shooting camping trip sometime next winter -

    It is well known that it is impossible to get the County on any of the islands to issue a CCW unless you are some form of law enforcement or security guard and even then it only counts for that county (which would still be great) -

    In light of Nordyke, Hawaii is due for some serious changes to its firearms laws and policies of enforcement and permitting -

    Hawaii needs: (1) proper reciprocity; (2) lawful open carry; (3) shall issue CCW; and (4) a proper Castle Doctrine - IMHO -

    Then we can talk about my AK and SKS and large capacity mags :celebrate

    This is a common mistake, Hawaii's standard capacity magazine ban ONLY applies to handgun magazines, it does not apply to rifle magazines. Your able to bring a 30 round mag or whatever mag you desire for your SKS and AK. Also, people make the assumption that Hawaii has an AWB, they do not. People confuse it with the "assault pistol" ban.

    134-8(c) The manufacture, possession, sale, barter, trade, gift, transfer, or acquisition of detachable ammunition magazines with a capacity in excess of ten rounds which are designed for or capable of use with a pistol is prohibited.

    Thanks for that - I will research Hawaii's laws more in the Winter next year when I look into which rifle to bring ~ because of the 3 day registration rule, it will need to be registered which is not too much hassle ~

    Mahalo, Marlboro--guess I should have been a little more clear in my query. I want to know how I can get involved with anyone who is active in restoring/protecting our right to carry concealed here. Any leads?

    What marlboro and i want to do, along witha few others, is to go apply for CCW permits, and see what happens. We need to get a good sized group of us together, all law abiding citizens that would easily be issued a CC permit on the Mainland.

    I have my CCW on the mainland in 2 states - suggest WA which has a $60 non-resident CCW (you need a local addy) and I know alot of people do the Utah CCW for non-residents which requires a course, I don't think a local addy is required and is good in more states -

    easy flights to SLC :celebrate

    what then - seek recognition of it in HI? what is the goal besides being able to conceal carry on the mainland?

    Lots of people in Los Angeles and San Diego area are offering Utah CCW courses, I bet one would be interested in an invite to Hawaii and could give the course here and you wouldn't have to travel to the mainland - they issue them by mail after you have the course from a licensed Utah CCW instructor -

    It'd be cheaper to fly someone in for a Hawaii business trip and gather on one island than for a few to fly to the mainland for the same purpose, IMHO -

    Check out www.calguns.net for leads on Utah CCW instructors -

    I would like to help y'all get it together but I am not in Hawaii often enough to commit to any in-person activities until next Winter -

    There's a case out of California that's coming up called the Sykes v. McGinness that will likely change the legal landscape for you Hawaiians. calguns.net forums would have more detail.

    I have a patient here who just returned from FrontSight with a 3-state CCW (one of which is Utah, I think),which is recognized in 27 other states, which he received after their 4-day program and included a 'free' Springfield XD-40. I value his opinion (Special Forces, years in LE and Security), and he was very pleased with Frontsight. An idea might be to approach Dr. Ignatius Piazza with a proposition for a contingent of HI residents looking to change policy in HI--I'll bet he would go for some kind of group discount.

    If you haven't, check out FrontSight.com--very informative--I've learned a lot just from his free newsletters and mailings.

    I've read on forums that the trainings are great and also that in connection with either a related real estate deal or some kind of membership deal, there is a lawsuit, a judgment and Piazza's in serious litigation - the actual trainings are done under receivership or something like that - you can research it online I'm sure -

    Nonetheless, he might be open to a proposal but I would do serious due diligence and it is possible that his hands are full -
