I finally was asked.

Well being a relatively new to this forum and to OC'ing in general I thought I would share my recent OC experience. As I'm sure that anyone that has looked out the window today was a nice day and being such a nice day I thought I would head out and do some shopping. Usually I will just CC but when its this nice out for some reason to OC.

Anyways, apon leaving a store in the mall someone from one of those lilttle shops that are always run up and down malls asked me if I was a cop. Well for some reason I was kinda suprised, but I told him no I was not. This prompted the expected next question, "Then why do you have a gun?". I had always thought I had my answer planned out for this question but I just froze for a second and said that im just exercising my 2nd Amendment Right. At that point I had the attention of everyone there and spent the next 5-10 explaining how it is legal and general gun laws in WA. They thanked me for talking with them and off I went.

Overall, it was a positive experiance and now there are 3 more people that know the laws and it sounded like one of them was even interested in getting his cpl once he gets his WA licence.:celebrate Not bad for a first time for being stopped, I was thinking I would get stopped by some big anti-gun person and get harassed for OC'ing.

Too bad not all encounters went that way. The only person, besides a police officer, who has ever even asked about my gun is the dentatl assistant at my dentist last week. People in Kent like to look and show some funny faces, but they don't seem to like to ask about it. Maybe I just look too intimidating to them.

I remember my first "cop question" about a year ago (May).I said, "no" and they said it was illegal to carry like that and Isaid, "no it wasn't." Pretty lame on my end but I was nervous.

The cool thing was those people went home and looked up OCWashingtonon google and found this site. The gentleman I encountered who asked me if I was a cop actaully posted on my thread giving me feedback of how things went according to how they (his wife too) precieved me. If I can remember they said I looked a little tense. It was great instant feedback from the public. Small world.

Yep, that was MyThought although they haven't posted since. You won them over since you complimented them by saying they seemed to bein their 20's and that you are such a nice looking fella.

I took me a while too, but the first (and only - it was last week) guy to ask me about it kept me at his store talking about guns for 15 minutes.
You're more likely to get a comment from a friendly than a dick.

I seem to get asked this question every other time I OC. Maybe the short hair... Maybe the way I dress... Maybe eve the mustache I'm currently sporting...



Most of the people just drop it after you say no. Kinda sheepishly... Otherwise I try and spark a conversation with them because most of the time people just have no idea that open carry is even an option. They really only do know about concealed carry.

I have only been OC'ing, very irregularly, for a little over a week. My first comment was last Friday at a specialty food store downtown Seattle. I got the cop question, then the security guard one, then the "well what are you then" question.

Gave the guy a pamphlet and explained I was just a citizen carrying a weapon for self defense as is my constitutional right.

Proceeded to get lots more questions and spent about 5 minutes total explaining what my legal rights were and what the stores were as well.


I also had one instance where a person definitely noticed I was carrying while I was in Safeway. A couple minutes later as I was leaving a police officer walked into the store. By the time I got to my car the officer came back out and started filling out some paperwork on the hood of his car. I have no idea if it was related to me or not, but since I have shopped at that store hundreds of times and never seen the police despite it being very close to the police station, I have to assume it might have been.

Thats one thing that I am going to start doing, I need to print me out some pamphlets. That would make explaining stuff whole lot easier, although my printer is out of ink atm.....kinda need to fix that =P

One of the times I was asked about being a cop......There I was with the mustache,standing at the Starbucks counter eating a donut and this lady looks at me and said "you gotta be a cop"...I had to to laugh as did the folks there that know me.

I've suffered worse . . .

I had a career detective ask if I was an "agent." (as in Federal).

When I asked why he thought I was a Fed, he said, "you just have the look."
