Oh, good .... Here we go again with "fascism" being bandied about. So many people talk about "fascist" this and "fascist' that without having a clue as to what "fascist" means. Last night I watcched a drunk call a cop a "fascist" for confiscatiing his brown bag and pouring out the booze prior to arrsting him for being drunk in public (which he was to a very disorderly degree).

Fortunately there is a gentleman on the Web whom I have cited in this forum several times. He has posted an article on his site called "Fascism: The Ultimate Definition" in which he examines the slightly differing definitions offered by prominent scholars such as Michael Mann, Robert Paxton, and RGB Bosworth. He then winnows these down and adds his own observations to distill what I think is the best definition of Fascism I have ever seen, and then offers som simple advice on how to avoid it. This can be found at http://www.Anesi.com/Fascism-TheUltimateDefinition.htm As always I urge those of you who have never been to this website to explore the rest of it also. Chuck is pretty damn smart.

Gandi saw compromise as a spiritual necessity that requires intellectual honesty . So many have harden hearts and wax built up in their ears to become united with the principles of our liberty and freedoms . What will be our sea salt that will bring us together ? Do you agree that this forum has the entire political and social spectrum including anti 2A members ? Although I would love to live withina United Order Utopia , the United States of America is the best system so far .

Scan me a copy of the check you're mailing the government or STFU.
Put it where the sun don't shine, boy.

You brought back a week old thread from pages back just to say that? :quirky

Been out of town for a week.

Listen, I don't like to be uncivil, but your comment of "STFU" just got to me. I would just as soon let it lay since I am not the type of individual to resort to name calling or disrespectful behavior.

Well there's your problem. This is the internet, stop taking "insults" so personally. I don't know you and you don't know me, so there's no use getting your panties in a bunch.

Civility doesn't stop at my port. While I am far from a sensitive type, I still go by the adage that one treats others with respect and dignity until given a reason not to.

Oh, BTW.. I don't wear panties. I leave those for my wife.

Don't take offense, because I actually like you. But "this is the internet" is not an excuse to use the forum as your own personal dumping ground. I realize we have our share of foaming at the mouth, rabid "right-wingers", but some of us value this site for what has been an important contribution to our own personal OC sagas. Why not be the better man and behave respectfully, and show the partisanites here as well as the Brady Bunch how reasonable gun owners can be (its not like you aren't one, after all)?

I know I myself don't have a perfect track record, but the comment in question I did find to be rude and unnecessarily inflammatory.

Don't forget the rabid and racist "left-wingers". We must show equal treatment, eh?

It was mild compared to what should have been said to someone that's in the group of people that bitch and whine, non-stop, about "socialism" and overtaxing the rich - yet... #1: don't have the first clue about economics and #2: are complaining for the sake of complaining, because they aren't interested in a solution, just more complaining. Because that's what we do with taxes in this country, we complain. The lower-middle class right wingersthat are seeing all the tax cuts cry that the rich need more tax cuts. Why don't you ever hear the rich crying that the rich need more tax cuts? Because they're educated and theyknow how the system works. In fact, there are many rich people, Warrent Buffet of particular note, that have no problem publicly stating that they should be paying MORE taxes. Why is that? Have you ever asked yourself that?

It's because the rich own the supply side and the middle to lower classes are the demand side. The more money the lower classes have, the more they can spend - the more they can spend, the more the rich make. Wealth moves upward, so you need a tax system that recycles it back down, otherwise it all goes up, demand disappears, and the system collapses. The ring wing nuts argue that "well the rich are the producers, and they create the jobs, yada yada yada." No. Wrong. The DEMAND creates the need to produce, which creates the jobs. It starts with demand. No demand = no supply = no jobs = no demand = no supply, etc. And, really, some guy paying 30% on $200,000,000/year... he's really not going to miss that money.

The right wingers need to shut up, let the rich worry about their own taxes, and enjoy their relatively low tax rate.

So when confronted with the astounding stupidity of the "omg obama is killing us with taxes" people (that just got a tax cut, BTW), what do you expect me to say?

Just do a search on the term. You'll find LOTS of occurences.

I've gotten that abbreviation thrown at me (imagine that!) and nobody blinked an eye. Nobody squawked. Of course, I don't take it serious, especially considering the usual sources. Here's how I handled it one time:

Since you weren't there, I'll respectfully suggest you STFU.
I went not as an OCDO member, not as a VCDL member...

Well, I never! :uhoh:

I guess you win that one!

Such talk coming from such a cute avatar.

Did anyone ever tell you you are quite the conversationalist? Don't lose any sleep over it...:dude:

BTW, unrequited, were you one of the ones who raised their hands when Ricker asked who was a VCDL member? Hmmm?

Whatever happened to oleunrequited?

I miss that poor boy. Last I recall he got into that jam-up at the Barnes and Noble. How did that turn out?

Nothing.

Besides, its not like they're totally wrong. Their interpretation of the causal history may be all @#$%ed up, but it's hard to deny that the government is a parasitic drain on the economy, and it accomplishes this through taxes.

For every $1 government spends on services the people have invested in, it blows $100 on crap. Check out our budget for overseas military expenditures.

I'm still waiting for the energy to write a compelling rebuttal to the assertion that our current economic system is "free market" in anything other than name only, that economies of scale are limitless, that competitive success inevitably leads to a huge divide between upper and lower class, and that a truly competitive free market has existed in America and failed, devolving into our current mess. None of the above has any merit, unless you define what we've been building in America as a "free market", which it isn't in any meaningful sense.

From the perspective of a free-marketeer who doesn't use it as an excuse for corporatist apologia, I feel quite comfortable agreeing with your interpretation of the causal history. Reagan did start this mess. But he didn't do it by advocating a "free market". He did it by implementing anti-competitive, corporatist/statist policies, all the time disingenuously calling it "deregulation" and working towards a "free market". If anything, one of the biggest harms he accomplished was the misappropriation of the term "free market".

I think you'll find surprising overlap between what you and I believe is wrong with our economic system, only you'll never be able to prove to me that truly free markets had anything to do with it.

Murray N. Rothbard, The Reagan Phenomenon

Edit: Do me the favor of reading that article. I actually read your Rolling Stone article before I rejected it. :p

I don't get the impression you spent much, if any, time with the Roderick T. Long material I referenced you to. Dr. Long addresses nearly identical concerns as your own, yet he has never come to the conclusion that freedom is to blame for our problems. If you had read some of this work, although I don't expect you would immediately agree with all my views, I feel as though you would be more accepting of the idea that, while there are a great many problems with how our economy has been managed by self-proclaimed "free marketeers", those same people have never pursued truly free market strategies and are thus not evidence for the failure of free markets.

Reagan is evidence of the failure of your beloved statism, not free markets.
