Went back to where my 7-car traffic stop took place. Needed some touch-up paint, so I went to look at Walmart's (not so) amazing selection of automotive paint. I had a close match picked out when the (nervous) asst manager approached me and told me that I had to leave the store, firearms aren't allowed.

He said "It's third shift in a retail store, you can't carry a gun in here." Hmm, probably when it's needed the most IMO.

I asked him if it was WalMart's official policy and he told me yes. I asked if it was OK if I took my selection to the front while I was on my way out. He said sure. About halfway to the front of the store, I stopped, turned around, and handed him the bottle of touch-up. I told him that I would just pick it up somewhere else, and continued walking toward the door. He told me that I was welcome to come back in the store and continue shopping unarmed. Won't happen. He made vauge references to some other incident where threats were made, and some else who may/may not have been armed having the police called on them.

I asked him to post if that was their official policy, so that responsible gun owners would know to take their money elsewhere. (Note: I'm not trying to create CPZ's, just make them easier to identify. We should know up front, not be escorted out like a busted shoplifter.)

They can keep their paint, it took me 2 tries (and some mixing) to come up with the right color at Meijer, but I was able to do so without being escorted out. I'd rather give my money to the store that respects my rights (so far).

Adding this WalMart to my "no shop" list for now, I might try back in a few months and see what happens. I am not banned from the store as far as I can tell, no one has told me that I am. Would I be tresspassing if I OC'd there again, assuming they're still not posted? There are plenty of other stores to shop at, I don't mind writing that one off completely if need be. Maybe OC during first or second shift since it's not allowed during third?

Horse feathers! They have no such policy, walmarts policy is to follow the state laws. That guy isan idiot. You should do some research and givehim the figures on themultitude of crimes committed in their parking lots across the country.

Two things. I would:

1) Tell anyone that gives me this load of garbage, that in such a large store in KY, he probably gets at least a hundred people or more a day that are concealed carrying, regardless of any posted signs. Why didn't he ask them to leave too?

2) There's another thread somewhere on these forums that references a letter received by upper management in Wal-Mart, that indicated open carry is legal, and local management decisions like this would not be tolerated. I would get a letter from this guy, in writing, signed, and go back to Wal-Mart, and show him the letter allowing you to OC in his store.

You need to contact the store's general manager in regards to their policy. Generally Walmart will follow the state's laws in regards to firearms. I've open carried in Walmarts in Lexington, Richmond, and Berea without incident. This is auninformed personthat doesn't know their own rules.

Wow that sucks!! I open carry in Walmart all the time. Been to several walmarts in Christian and Hopkins County with no issues and no questions. As a matter of fact I went shopping last night about 1 am. Where is this Walmart located at? If you don't mind me asking how were you dressed, type of holster being used?

I'll try to answer all the questions in 1 response here...

East End of Louisville, locally known as the Middletown Walmart. http://preview.tinyurl.com/MiddletownWalMart (this is a link to a google map of the location, WM is newer than the pics)

Crimes committed in WalMart's parking lot? Never! I guess my wife's car had already been hit before I parked it, nevermind the paint all over the ground. Would WalMart review tapes to get a vehicle description? Nope. (This was a while back in a different area)

Same method of carry as before. IWB holster, shirt tucked behind the butt of the pistol (I'm still looking for my paddle holster, must have misplaced it in the move). I often carry this way, it almost never attracts attention. I was wearing khaki cargo pants and a printed button-down shirt, untucked. Shirt was long enough to cover my belt but would come up if I bent over. (This is not my preferred method of OC but it seems to work well with the seat bolsters in my car, and is legal but should only be utilized by those with CCDW to avoid potential legal issues.)

This is the same WalMart that I talked to the general manager at before, his recommendation to me was to leave it in the car. I took his recommendation as no more than a recommendation.

This is the only WalMart that I have had a problem in. Another in town asked me how long I was going to be in the store so they could respond properly to questions from other customers. I got one in OH to un-post. Even bought a rifle and ammo at another WalMart while OC. This one perplexes me.

Interestingly enough, there was a guy restocking the auto paint section at Meijer, 20 at the oldest. I just thought about it now, he was restocking to my immediate left about waist level. I was standing close to the shelf looking at touch-up. He hesitated at one point, I stepped back so he could restock where I was standing (hadn't decided on a color yet). He didn't seem any more disturbed by the fact that I was carrying than he was by the fact that I was standing in his workspace. Maybe he was just better at determing a threat level than the people at WalMart.

Edit: fixed bad hyperlink

Why avoid it? Make a point of going in OC. The worst they can do is ask you to leave. Then avoid the place. Maybe the more people they see OC'ing the quicker they will be educated on Walmarts corp. policy.

Yesterday afternoon I saw a young man (22-25) OCing in the E'town Wal Mart. He did not draw any undo attention. No one ran in panic from the store although it was at 6:00 PM on Friday night. My only issue would be to tell him to dress up a little. He looked a little shabby, dirty camo tee shirt and dirty jeans. When I OC, I try to dress a little on the neat side as many judge by appearance. I have OCed in this Wal Mart before and never a problem.

How many times do we have to tell people to never encourage posting premises??! We do not want businesses to post - you did well by leaving your merchandise and leaving the premises - but asking them to post is the wrong thing to do - the right thing to do is to try to reach the regional walmart manager and make a complaint - don't yield ground, the local manager was not inline with corporate policy, so complain, dopn;t give them ideas and encourage them - from their perspective, you are saying its OK to ban guns provided you post!

You do your thing, I'll do mine.

I don't appreciate being escorted out of an establishment. I would rather know that I'm not welcome in the first place. They can't post, because they are only allowed to put signs in the window that corporate provides.

Wow, definitely contact the store manager on the issue. That's ridiculous. Thought about getting a voice recorder for these encounters?

Maybe it's just the way I carry myself (been told this) but I'm NEVER accousted while OCing.

I reckon I'd have to OC nekkid with a punt gun over my shoulder. I won't do that. Don't own a punt gun.:dude:

Bummer about getting harrassed. I work about 5 minutes from that wal-mart. I hardly ever open carry just because i would rather not deal with the uneducated harrassment. I am 5'7and look youngso I am more approachable to harrass then say if I was 6'3 or something.

I don't understand this idea....i worked at walmart Hillview before... at one point our manager had a district manager who wore twin 1911's to managers meetings....I OC regularly in Hillview....'No Guns' is not Walmart's policy at all.

This Middletown Manager screwed up, and lost business for it and is getting negative feedback re:his store....this is the message that should go to the Disrict Manager...who will straighten him out.

but you can't role over and not patron B/c of one dumb and wrong employee
