Good LEO Experience

As all good stories start out:

So no sh!t there I was, cruising at about 65 down US 95 Northbound in Benewah County just North of Tensed when my radar detector goes nuts. The BCSO car passes me going southbound and doesn't seem to turn on me until I see it coming up fast in my mirror. Crap, I was doing 5 over and now I am going to get a weak citation for it. The Deputy followed me for about 1.5 miles watching my driving pattern. By this time I know he has run my plates. Those 1A plates are a target North of McCall unless you have a UI sticker on your car. The road widened and on come the party lights and I see Christmas in my rearview mirrors and pull over with my info ready.

I have been pulled over enough that I am no longer nervous when it happens. The deputy walks up to the car and proceeds to tell me that my car was reported an hour ago as a possible DUI leaving Moscow around noon. It was 12:45. He went on to say that when he was following me I didn't have the driving patter of a drunk but a race drive the way I was taking the turns.
I hand the Deputy my info with my CWP on top. He looks at it and laughed as he said he didn't care if I had a gun as long as it wasn't pointed at him.

He ran my info, came back handed me my info back and we talked/ joked a little about why I was called in as a DUI and came to the conclusion that one of the slow moving vehicles I passed leaving Moscow didn't like being passed and called me in. I also did not receive a ticket or warning for my 5 over speed. He was actually concerned about the original call and didn't try to stick me with something else.

That Deputy was very laid back and at the same time very professional about the event and my carrying a firearm. He explained everything clearly so I knew why I had been pulled over right from the beginning so I wasn't wondering why I was on the side of the road. I cannot remember his name but he represented his agency and career field so well that I wanted to post about my good experience with Benewah County.



Note:I always hand my CWP to LEOs when I am pulled over so they are informed that I am carrying as a courtesy to them. I have never been removed from my vehicle or disarmed, I think my forwardness and honesty about carrying has gone a long way in this regard.

Well at least it was a good encounter with the law. This is off topic but it reminds me of a time i got pulled because someone thought my car looked like the one used in a back robbery and they thought it was the get a way car lol. No really im glad it went well for you and i hope it always does go well for everyone.

I want to give this a little bump with this weeks atta-boy points awarded to the Latah County Sheriff's Office and ISP up in the CdA area.

I was pulled over for speeding by LCSO on Thursday of last week and the Deputy really had his sh!t together. He was polite, professional and again didn't care that I was carrying.He told me right up front why I was pulled over and that I wasn't going to be cited. I didn't get a ticket, but did get a slow down warning. The stop was caused by me driving a red 06 Mustang GT at 10 over with no front plate. I can completely understand why I got lit up, it was my fault and no hard feelings toward the cop for doing his job. I guess I'll use the brakes more at the bottom of a hill.

Later on that trip I was passed, more like had my doors blown off, in the construction zone just North of the Rez Casino in Worley, ID by a car doing easily 30 over the posted 55 speed limit. I have friends that work road construction so paced her for a bit in the Mustang GT I was in then called the female driver into ISP. To my surprise, ISP found and caught the car and held her there so I could talk with the Trooper about what I had seen. He got her for doing 12 over, 72 in a 60 so I didn't have to write up a report or testify in court. The suspect car was driven by a 18yo female accompanied by her friends. If I can keep a tweaked Mustang somewhat under control she should have been able to keep that Nissan sedan close to the speed limit. We talked for a bit on the side of the road about what I had seen and why he had pulled them over. I was actually thanked for calling the car in, which I found to be a little strange.

I think some of the reason I have quite a few good encounters with the cops, even while OCing, is that I treat them as I want to be treated during the encounter. Polite, professional, have a basic understanding of the laws and be able to communicate effectively without going on the offensive.

What a pathetic country of tattle-tales we've become. The American spirit is dead when people look to the government to settle every grievance and to exact revenge on others.

Glad it ended well, but a free man does not get arrested in his travels by agents of the state.

I don't want this to devolve into a Constitutional law thread so I will try to head it off here. The primary reason I started this was because I am tired of all of the cop hate on this board, so I wanted to share some positive experiences that I have, even if I was in the wrong in the first place.

I didn't see this earlier. You called in a speeder and then pulled over to help to cops with the ticket, even being willing to "write up a report" and testify in court?

Sometimes, I just don't recognize my country, anymore.

You conveniently left out the part aboutit being in a construction zone. A lot of states have cracked down on speeding in construction zones due to workers getting hurt or killed. In other words, it's a legitimate and actualsafety issue. The workers are there on behalf of the people who use the road, and they deserve to be protected from the idiots on the road.

Furthermore,if you think that being an officialwitness to the breaking of a postedlaw is even remotely like a secret police informer, then you are incredibly stupid.

You are unbelievable. Go back to your cabin in the woods and keep worshipping Rush, O' Reilly and worrying about the vast left wing conspiracy coming to take you away. Taking a work zone speeding problem and trying to turn in into a gun rights argument is reaching at best, more like ridiculous. I am also old enough to have seen actual construction in a construction zone. I am 23.

I'm no lover of law enforcement, but I do respect them and the job they do, and when read these positive accounts of contacts this cold heart was gladdened a bit. Good on them, and good on you fellas for posting the positive stories about the officers. It's easy to sit back and Monday-morning quarterback all police actions,or to shower them with praise for heroic performance in a crisis situation, but few people post attaboys for their everyday performance, and that's where it all really counts.

Good for you, a positive LE experience. I too am tired of all the LEO bashing that goes on in the forum.

Interestingly enough, I have been OC'ing regularly in Moscow and Pullman for the last 8-9 months, and have yet to have LE called on me anywhere. NOt that I am complaining, I just expected it much sooner, especially with Moscow being such a liberal town.

Anyway, thanks for the story.

One thing I've noticed is that for a 'liberal town' Moscow is not at all liberal. Even the liberals have some measure of common sense. The cops in the area really know the law with respect to firearms, too, so that helps.

Thought I might share on this one, new to the site and glad to be here. Pulled over in Meridian the other day. Turned out the officer wanted to let me know the law on the tires being a little to far out from the wheelwell and that I should have mud flaps. The point is after showing him my DL, I passed him the CC permit also, he asked where the weapon was, I told him my right hip. He asked the type of weapon and then mentioned the possibility of what a ticket would cost for the vehicle infractions. He then proceeded to give back all paperwork and sent me on my way. The Meridian pfficer was very nice, curtious and informative. The Wyoming Trooper back in March, he was understanding of the law also, he did take the weapon clear it and then run the Ser#. He eventually gave it back, with ticket for speeding. All together, both times have been without issue. Not so worried anymore when being confronted with LEO in this part of the country.

I've only had 1 experience along this thread. 2 years ago, crossed the desert while hunting, ended up in Shoshone. blew a stop sign and was lit up by a city officer. He asked what we were doing in town with the rifles, I told him. He asked forpapers (the usual) and asked if we had any more weapons in the vehicle? Told him i had a pistol behind the seat, was it loaded, yes, let me have a look at it, got it out and presented it to him. He took it back to his ride and came back with my warning ticket, bullets and pistol. He simply reminded my to keep it in plain sight and unloaded. Was really happy to leave town with only a warning...

Been pulled over for speeding 4 times in the last 7 years here in Idaho by both ISP and County Sheriffs. Zero tickets.

Had a nasty accident last fall when I hit a patch of ice and took an E-Ticket ride off the highway. Everything that was inside my truck ended up outside of the truck when it was over. I had one rifle and three handguns with me at the time. All of these were recovered prior to my trip to the hospital. I got a message while in the hospital that the Benewah County Sheriffs office had retrieved several box's of ammo and my laptop computer from the crash scene. I really appreciated them getting those items back to me. Wish they had found the rest of my Norelco Razor.

Anyway again no citation.


Over in Washington State if you see Christmas Lights in your rear view mirror it is pretty likely they will be extracting cash from your wallet.

I was recently pulled over in Moscow for not stopping at the end of a driveway before entering the street. Kind-of a petty road crime. The officer was Ok. I had let my DL expire SIX YEARS AGO!:banghead: Oooops! He let me go, no ticket, just a verbal warning. I got my new license this morning... Not all cops act badly...
