CWP question - OK. vs VA.

Hi guys,
I'm from Oklahoma with a conceal weapon permit good through Sept 2010.
I no longer have a Oklahoma Drivers license as i now have a VA one.

My question is do i have go through training or is my current permit proof
that I'm "qualified" ???

I'm wanting to get a VA CWP but I'm wondering if my Oklahoma one is fine for Virgina,
or should i just go ahead and get the VA permit... or just carry open??

any advice is helpful.

Not so fast. Here are the ways to satisfy the Virginia training requirements (a part of § 18.2-308.G.):

1. Completing any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries or a similar agency of another state;

2. Completing any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;

3. Completing any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law-enforcement agency, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association or the Department of Criminal Justice Services;

4. Completing any law-enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;

5. Presenting evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or current military service or proof of an honorable discharge from any branch of the armed services;

6. Obtaining or previously having held a license to carry a firearm in the Commonwealth or a locality thereof, unless such license has been revoked for cause;

7. Completing any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association-certified firearms instructor;

8. Completing any governmental police agency firearms training course and qualifying to carry a firearm in the course of normal police duties; or

9. Completing any other firearms training which the court deems adequate.

You might think that item #6 would cover you, but notice it says "a license to carry a firearm in the Commonwealth." I'm pretty sure that an OK license doesn't satisfy that requirement.

So you're left with the slim possibility of item #9, but I sure wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

If I were in your position, I'd just take the online course that's been discussed here in the past. It satisfies most judges currently, and after July 1st, the new law kicks in that specifies that online training is satisfactory to take that out of the hands of the dissenting judges.

Oh, and by the way, in Virginia the permit is called a Concealed Handgun Permit, or CHP. Sooner or later someone here will jump on you for calling it a CWP or anything else.

So I thought I'd beat the rush. :)

You could always apply and submit that as your training item. If VA accepts it, then you are golden. If not, then get some training. It's not like your OK permit is expiring soon.
