Completely inappropriate. LEOs should know better than that.

Also, the first comment on the page, by screen name lsmft11, is infuriating. The officers should be taken to court over that.

I'm wondering if it was even a cop. She didn't mention any ID by the supposed officer.

Would have been interesting to see what the outcome would have been if she were armed.

And we thought we were the ones being picked on!

No kidding. He's lucky he wasn't following someone with a CPL or otherwise. Had that of been me, nothing short of running out of ammunition would get my fat ass into any faster pace other than a slight jog.

In Michigan you don't have to retreat!...I'd have called the police, better to be safe than sorry.

i would have called 911 while running (assuming i was unarmed like she apparently was)

i agree, it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if she were armed.

I'm too old and fat to run. Besides, even when I was younger and in great shape, I was still slow, so running was never in my arsenal.

Since we're MMQB'ing this, I'd cross the street (to get away from him) and call the cops. I might even turn and start walking the other direction. If he followed me after that, I'd probably ask him why he was following me, and tell him that he needs to rethink his tactics. It's one think if we're both just out for a stroll, but if he starts bird dogging me, I'm going to assume he's a threat, and do whatever I can to get out of that situation.

That officer should be reprimanded for stalking someone like that. I understand patroling the neighborhood, but when someone tells you they are going to call the police (in a situation like that), it's fair to say that they have reasonable fear than the officer should have immediately addressed. To instead keep feeding those fears was dangerous to both the officer and citizen.

That was my immediate thought as well. A man dressed in all black, with no police markings... so I'm assuming also no shiny badge. She didn't mention a utility belt... so no gun? No flashlight? No radio? And how many officers these days WALK beats anymore? Especially alone in a dark neighborhood. She also didn't mention anything about whether or not he asked her for ID.

It very well could have been a citizen trying to look out for the neighborhood, then realized after he scared the poor woman that he screwed up and tried to cover his butt by saying he was a cop.

Edited to Add: My MMQB response would be to cross the street, and if he followed, then I'd turn a corner and cross the street again. If he continued to follow, then I would assume at that point that it was more than mere coincidence and poignantly ask him if he's following me, and if so, then why. If he identified himself as a police officer, I would demand to see ID... if he failed to oblige then I would call the police, right in front of him, to report a man identifying himself as a police officer who is attempting to stop me... then continue about my business. If he continued to follow, I would warn him that I'm trained to defend myself and that I'm armed.

Of course, when I walk at night, I'm usually escorting my German Shepherd... if push came to shove (literally), I'm sure she'd get the first crack at him. She's well trained and she loves her daddy. :-)

Anything I post may be my opinion and not the law... you are responsible to do your own verification.

Blackstone (1753-1765) maintains that "the law holds that it is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer."

Or it could have been something else. It could have been a lot of things, but she should have called the police after he didn't stop after her threat to do so.
