Yep…….everybody’s going talk about this in the jury selection room.

Me: Good morning Deputy.
Deputy: Good morning.
Me: I need an escort the check my firearm.
Deputy: Do you have a license?
Me: WA State doesn’t have registration law for firearms.
Deputy: no, I mean do you have license to carry a firearm.
Me: WA doesn’t require a license to carry a firearm in this manner.
Deputy: No, I mean do you have license to carry concealed.
Me: I am sorry Deputy. Maybe I am dense. I don’t understand the relevance of your question. WA is an open carry state for all public places except those specifically designated as off limits such as on the other side the metal detector, hence the reason I flagged you over here. A concealed carry license is required for concealed carry. I am not carrying concealed.
Deputy: mmm. Wait here.
A couple minutes later another Deputy shows up.
Deputy 2: you need to check a firearm?
Me: yes, sir.
Deputy: what you carry?
Me: today, I am carrying a full size HK USP 9 mm.
Deputy: Nice gun. I have a second home in New Mexico. Everyone open carries everywhere. I don’t understand what the big deal is in WA. You thought you would get tossed out of jury duty open carrying so everyone could see you?
Me: uh, yeah that was the plan.
Deputy: (laughing) they think your plainclothes law enforcement and you don’t know your way around this court house.

I checked my firearm.

I hope you have some Washington Gun Rights pamphlets to hand out in the jury room when you get picked! At least by the time the trial is over, deputy #1 will understand that OC is legal and you don't need a CPL.

Gotta like that deputy's attitude -- really, what is the big reaction to OC all about?

I say Kudos to both Deputies. Deputy #1 was smart enough to know when he needed to clarify his belief when it was challenged in a intelligent and respectful manner. Deputy 2 for understanding the laws and allowing you to do what the law does not restrict.

+1.

And I'd also like to welcome the OP to the forums. Good job at the checkpoint.

I will see your +1 and raise you +1 ;)

That's exactly the kind of reaction we want to see in LEOs when they have a doubt about laws. Kudos to both Deputies!
