One reason to OPEN CARRY is not only to protect yourself, but others. The more you open carry, the more the police and general public undersdtands that there are good guys with guns... less likely I will get shot, less likely you will get shot...

There seems to be a bit of conflict between the title of your post and its contents.

Also, are you saying that the "40 percent of shooting by Central Florida police involved suspects who were unarmed" shouldn't have been shot? Why not?

Generally speaking, there are two reasons why unarmed people get shot.

1. They make a threatening or potentially threatening movement, such as reaching into a pocket.

2. They pull out or wave something that is mistaken for a gun under conditions of high adrenalin and/or poor lighting.

In addition, most unarmed people who get shot were not doing what the police told them to do.

If an LEO draws and opens fire on you for no obvious, apparent, or subtle reason, your are certainly within your rights to return fire and would be a foolif you didn't. You don't know who the fellow is, if he is really an LEO, or the why of it all. Just make sure you have all of your ducks in a row.

There was a case some years back (not all that many) in Fairfax, Virginia where a homeowner opened fire on county police who violently entered his home... unannounced. He was acquited, the police were chastised, and the homeowner was lectured by the judge. Seems his honor didn't like the idea of citizens firing on police even in dire circumstances.

I would never want to be in a situation where I had to open fire on an LEO(s). You have to know that in just about anyplace in the country, the deck is going to be stacked against you. But if the circumstances were of a nature that such action was necessary... well, I've rather stay alive.

The Athens, Tennessee incident in 1946 comes to mind.
