So there's going to be a Washington State Diversity Fair sponsored by Washington State Department of Labor & Industries.

I think thisis an absolutely golden opportunity topromote Open Carry. You may want to bring your audio/video recorders to record in public when the inevitable trespass attemptcomes up.Keep in mind, this is onState Property and the public has been officially invited. This is a great opportunity to exercise ourwonderful state pre-emption and our staterights.

Perhaps we should all put smiley stickers on our pistol grips and/or holsters to show that we're all smiling in the same language. :D

"The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries is hosting this year's 9th Annual Diversity Fair on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at the Department of Labor and Industries Headquarters Building, 7273 Linderson Way SW, Tumwater, WA 98512.

The event is open to all Washington State Employees and Community Members.

There will be resource tables featuring State and Community Organizations, educational exhibits, mouth-watering ethnic foods, a featured keynote speaker, and workshops."

"Our state's greatest strength
is its diversity"

Governor Gregoire

Oh yes, this magnificent waste of our tax dollars happens every year. Forgot about it. Can't figure out the reason behind it, but we may as well add some flavor to the diversity eh?

I owna white version of thatshirt with the exact same photograph and text (size and font) except that the text on mine for the word DIVERSITY orange on top and fades to yellow in the center with a fade to green on the bottom.

I don't think I'll wear mine to the event though, as open-carry is "in your face" enough for the ultra-socialists that will be at the event. I think I'll opt for some khaki dockers with a light, solid colored(such as light blue) shirt with a collar, a breast pocket, and at least 3 buttons on it. I really want to look as benign and respectable as possible so "business casual" attire will do nicely. I think I'll let my giant black USP full-size celebrate my diversity for me.

Hah!

All kidding aside, I would like to make this a serious OC event. Unless something comes up, I will be there open-carrying with smiley stickers on my holster and pistol-grip.

Hey, it's on a Tuesday. It's in Tumwater. I'm going. (Tuesday is a day off for me!)

Always wondered what the heck these Diversity Fairs were all about anyway. Anyone want to hook up before/after for an impromptu coffee/lunch/whatever? I know a great pizza joint... And a really cool bookshop to check out. In fact Olympia has all kinds of neat places in downtown.

Mmmm if we have several folks going, why not meet up someplace first, and then head up to Tumwater? Couple of coffee shops downtown I like to visit, or we could just meet at a park in downtown Oly. Could even park and take the bus up there. There is a bus going that way every 15 minutes or so.

Here is a map http://www.lni.wa.gov/Main/ContactInfo/OfficeLocations/maps/maptumwater.asp

Intercity Transit Route 13 goes from Olympia Transit Center to Labor and Industries in about 25 minutes

IT has a vague and incomplete understanding of open carry laws, despite my best efforts to educate them. They apparently can't understand the complete phrase "warrants alarm for the safety of others" and instead uses the old saw "warrants alarm" in their rules regarding carry.

However I've had a few conversations with their director, and they know what is up. That they haven't fully explained this to their staff is their own failure.

I've attached the most recent memo from IT to their staff (few got it or read it) regarding carry.

Anyway, look forward to meeting some other folks. Good call Shadowfax on this!

That's a great idea about meeting for lunch/coffee beforehand and taking a bus to the location. I'll print out a copy of that IT memo you provided for us, just in case the driver is unaware of state law and how it relates to IT policy.

Pick a nice spot for us to meet for food and coffee before we attend the Fair. We can park at one of the parks (no pun intended) and then take the bus to the fair.

I'll see if I can get another east-side OC'er to come with me.

Name a place, sv_libertarian, and I'll be there. (10am is good, since the Fair starts at 11am)

So right now it's me, Squeak and Shadowfax? Anyone else?

Let me mull over a place to meet; just coffee, or breakfast? Might want to be a bit earlier than 10am if anything but a quick cup of coffee.
