Why to get a CCW even if you OC

OC is legal in Louisiana.

My parents live in Arkansas. Myparents-in-law live in Texas, and own land in Oklahoma where we spend many long weekends a year.

Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma are strict no OC states. Furthermore, they have restrictions on travel with a firearm. In OK, you can't have it concealed OR loaded. If it's unloaded and put in a compartment then it's illegal. If it's out in the open and loaded then it's illegal. Texas and Arkansas laws restrict vehicle carry to "traveling" only. So if I'm up there and want to go to the grocery store with a firearm, that is illegal.

I need a CCW permit to safely carry in these other states.

I just wanted to throw that out there - not everybody who gets a CCW is "bowing down to the state" or "refusing to exercise their rights." It's just practical for self defense if you ever leave your OC state.

I think those of us who don't want a CCW are not saying that there aren't cases where at this time that you need a CCW.

I think we are looking more along the lines of we don't like the fact that we have to ask for permission, and pay, in order to exercise a right.

In Alaska, you can OC or CC without a permit. They also have a permit available for a fee of about $10.00. This is simply for use in other states, not a requirement.

If a certain state doesn't allow OC, then by all means, get whatever you have to get in order to protect youself and your family.

My father is living in Tenessee adn my brother in Colorado. If I want to OC or CC in those states I need a CHP permit like the one the State of La issues.

Also, here in La you can't OC into a resturant which sells alcohol to drink on the premisis. So most places that don't have a drive thru and a clown for a mascot are not places you can legally OC. That's not to say I want to drink while carrying. You can't OC even if you don't order drinks. With a CHP I can at least take my family out to Applebees or Logans Roadhouse without breaking the law.

WA state allows open carry but requires a Concealed Pistol Permit to carry a loaded handgun (and only handgun) in a motor vehicle.

Thus, a CPL (as we call them) is required to open-carry loaded in a vehicle. Many of us hate the idea of a CPL but still get them so we don't have to load/unload each time we exit/enter a vehicle.

In MI most of the pistol free zones are negated with a CPL. For instance all of the OC pistol free zones are ok to carry in with the exception of courthouses, casinos, and federal buildings. Of the CC pistol free zone I can OC with a CPL in all but the afore mentioned OC zones!

That is why I have a CPL! It also makes OC and a car much easier. As in MI it is conciderd CC when you get in the car. But with a CPL it is no problem. SO a CPL just makes OC very easy in MI and takes away a few more impediments!

The AZ CWP is recognized in those states (most of 'em) where OC is not. It eliminates any questionable incidents of being concealed or not... (We have monsoon rains here and on those days it's covered.) Also if I'm packin' in my truck 'n it's not actually visable. Not that I've ever had that problem... but it's a nice CYOA. It makes it much easier to purchase a firearm... no 4473's to fill out or waiting periods. The permit is required for the method of carry, not the act. The act is a recognized Right.

The CWP address weapons... not just firearms.

A concealed carry permit (or whatever acronym or other wording you want to use) is only needed if you wish to remain within the law. So in a way you're bowing to the state by getting a permit.

I'm not advocating breaking the law, just breaking man-made laws that are against natural laws. Of course the consequences from the state will still exist whether the law is just or not, so break at your own risk.

I'm fully expecting a barrage of fire about how I'm giving OC a bad name and how the reputation is being tarnished because I'm not obeying the law or something along those lines. I'm just sick and tired of the term "law-abiding" being thrown around. Sometimes it's impossible to be law-abiding and own a firearm (Chicago & New York).

With that being said, another reason that some people get a concealed carry permit is because it exempts people from the 1000 ft rule in regards to schools. It's a big hassle for people trying to remain legal if they have to avoid areas that are 1000' from all the public and private schools in the area.

I really think everyone needs to get togther on this and make a nationwide travel law for carrying while driving/Freedom of Travel without license or registration no matter what state your in.
If you are legal then driving while carrying even in NYC or Chi should and is legal no matter what those Cities say.
If we all just got togther July 4th and take over DC then all the peoples can be free and we wont end up like england.

It increases my options. Without it I can either OC or disarm. With it I can now conceal if I would rather not OC. I can buy pistols without waiting on a purchase permit. I don't have to worry about a LEO arguing that it is concealed while I am riding in a vehicle. And most importantly for me, my wife prefers it, so the marital bliss can continue.

I should know more about Texas law im gonna start learning now since im gonna go back soon. Its been years since I have been back I was born in Dalles and there has always been a special connection for me about the state.
Yeah your completly right about the options and I think that is what draws me to CC but the factor I have real freedom is what keeps me doing the magazine shuffle everytime I get in and out of the car.
I can meet the requirements on my own time and not pay anyone and I would rather pay a friend in ammo to teach me saftey and combat training than the state of which I was not born and does not make laws in myh favor as a national in their state of Ohio.

That was one of the primary reasons I got mine. I live on the property line of a school, so I technically can't go pick up my mail while carrying, without that bit of paper. And I pass at least 3 schools on the way to the range - when I'm always armed.

We know from prior polls on OCDO that a significant majority of OCDO members have a CC permit/license. And we also know that there is a vocal minority who stand on principle and choose not to obtain a CC permit/license. I respect those who choose to stand on their principles in the matter. I understand those who choose to get a CC permit/license.

I actually have a CCW in my state of residence as well as (finally) a non-resident state to be able to carry in all 36 states that offer reciprocity. For me it is a practical matter as I live in a state without OC preemption and a city that has an ordinance against it. Besides that we travel enough through non-OC areas and states that I had to make a practical choice.

Because, getting a concealed handgun permit offers the holder even more freedoms and protections within the law.

Texas does NOT restrict vehicle carry to traveling only. The only restriction in Texas law concerning a handgun in a vehicle is that it be concealed - no permit required. Does not matter is you are a resident going about your daily business or just traveling through the state.

I have a Wasington CPL to carry loaded in the vehicle, and just to not have to worry if my gun is covered by a jacket or something.
First, you quoted him wrong... (He does not state that OC is legal in Tx & Ar, and it Isn't)
Second, Texas law (Part of 46.02 iirc) DOES limit car carry to 'travel' however 'travel' is not defined, therefore open to interpretation. In my OPINION, any time I go anywhere I am 'traveling'. I have to 'travel' to go to my neighbors house...
