Funny, maybe, but you can't always predict how your questioner is going to react. E.g. we've got members here from WA who have had close relatives killed in the line of duty, what if your questioner was someone like that?

I think a very neutral response like "Why do you ask?" serves the cause better, as it puts the ball back in their court while giving them the very least possible content to react to.

Old story:

"Are you a spy? (secret agent, undercover cop, etc)

"If I'm not, I'll say "No." If I am, I'll say "No." So what's the point of your question?"

While getting gas at Costco(yeah yeah I know) for the Suburban (40 gal tank) a small SUV pulls up behind me with mom and kid. Mom gets out to pump gas and the kid is hanging out the window. The little boy spots me and says "Look mom a policeman" He then says "can I see your badge?" Mom says "Joey, leave the man alone." I reply with sorry buddy I'm not a policeman. At this point mom says loudly "JOEY, get in your seat and buckle up..... I chuckle and smile at her and wait for the pump to finish.

I can pretty much guarantee I'll never be asked if I'm a cop. And if I am asked they'd better be carrying a white cane with a red tip or I'll offer up a rude comment.

Nothing wrong with your approach, KParker.
