PFPI Basic AR-15 Course: Hudson, WI; Sept 19-20

The Personal and Family Protection Institute (PFPI) will be
hosting a two-day Basic AR-15 course at the Hudson Rod

This course will be taught by David LaValley. David served in the

two tours of duty in Iraq in 2003 and again in 2005. Since
then he has worked in a variety of private security positions

rifle with both classroom and range exercises. Our
classroom component covers discussion on topics such as
    mechanical operation, dis/reassembly, shooting
fundamentals, gun-handling techniques, zeroing iron sights,
and ammunition usage and selection. The
practical exercises will begin with zeroing iron sights, rifle
presentation, shooting positions, shooting drills, threat
assessment, and preventative maintenance and cleaning.
and a desire to improve your knowledge and shooting skill.

    Requirments:
AR-15 style rifle chambered in .223 / 5.56 with iron sights
250 rds of factory ammunition, 500rds is suggested.
    Ear and eye protection
    Baseball cap
    Elbow/knee pads
    Weapons cleaning kit.

    Our course is appropriate
for beginning level AR-15 shooters as well as people
preparing for law enforcement and military service.
PFPI is dedicated to the continued existence of shooting
clubs in the United States. To show our support for
Hudson Rod & Gun Club and its mission to advance the
shooting sports, your tuition also covers a 1-year
membership a the Club for non-members or a $50 credit
towards next year's dues for current members.
Tuition is $250 and must be paid in advance. Please call

This is a pretty fantastic dvd.

    http://www.magpul.com/catalog/index....roducts_id=298

I picked up a lot of stuff from this. It's also way cheaper than this class.

Sorry bud but your class is a bit pricey for a lot of us.

Sorry guys about the price... If you look into the actual price of the range and arranging three instructors, plus ammo, trust me when I say there is no money being made off anyone out there.

As for the ammo please re-read the description again, 250 rds is the min. If you can not afford or find the ammo check here on ammoman.com for 5.56.

As for what "Normal" people can afford please give me an example of what is a good price that is affordable? I believe the company's price is much cheaper then any and all others offered, but tell me what you think...

no, I am not a socialist, Obama lover... I understand things cost money...but in this day and age of sickeningly expensive ammo....classes are for the wealthy. Regular folk can't afford the cost.

This is why I ask what type of cost are you looking for. I wish to attract the mass, not make a bunch of money off anyone. I'm here to offer a service that is harder to find in WI, and use my skills I learned in on the road and in combat to bring the masses up to date with current levels. This class will prepare anyone for military, LE, or your families defence in any situation. After this class PFPIwill be offering a Combat AR15 courses for thosewishing to improve and exceed therecurrent level ofknowledge and shooting skills.

I think a lot of the problem is where you're holding it and the general cost of ammo. That's a really long drive and gas prices still kinda suck. Also people might not have 250-500 rounds of .223 laying around and with the prices it's expensive when you can even find it. I don't doubt that it's probably a fair price for that kind of training but with the added factors that are out of your control it gets really pricey.

If you were holding something like that in the Milwaukee area I'd likely go as I have the ammo laying around. I'd even bring a buddy, but driving across the state is out of the question for me.

Edit: Forgot you were talking about a basic course. I personally have the basics pretty well covered and would only be interested in a combat course.

Is there interest in your side of the state, this class is the first being held in Wi for PFPI. I'm hoping to get this conversation drawn up because there will be several more class planned very soon after this class is completed. So if anyone would like to tell me where they want to see a class put on, then as a company we can work to get class put on over different areas of the state.

I want to thank everyone for there replays so far they are helpful! I very much want to bring these class out to everyone in this state to fix the misconceptions about our favorite evil "black gun".

PS: No matter the interest AR-15 Basic 1 or 2 day, Combat 1 or 2 day, plus any type of or combination of these courses can be built for. We also offer woman's only courses. Please check the website to see what class we offer... And a complete price listing, with several contact numbers.

Next summer, a 1 day compressed Combat couse would be nice, in the Green Bay area. Maybe a 8 hour couse. 2 days is just impossible for me, as I am a wedding DJ& my weekends are always busy. A Sunday class would be ideal. I plan on stocking up on .223 ammo next year, add another 4000 rounds to my cuurent4000 round stick pile.

    Hello all,

My name is Nathan. I am the owner of PFPI training. Some very good points were brought up that I thought I should address personally.
    • Ammo requirements:
      • Trust me, I feel the bite of ammo prices just as much as the rest of you do. It's hard to afford ammo now, assuming you can even find it. The link that hauling4you posted is a great place to find relatively inexpensive ammunition. It may not be the cleanest ammo, and may not be allowed in all indoor ranges, but for the purposes of collecting ammunition for future need, or for this course, it is all acceptable.
      • The original plan was to require 500 rounds of ammunition, but because of these concerns we reduced the amount required to 250.
    • "Wasting" rounds on a beginner course.
      • I recently took another instructor's beginner AR-15 course outside of Minneapolis, and shot 100 rounds. It was a one day course, and most of the time was spent zeroing the rifle. After that, there were a few very basic quick acquisition drills, and a very minimal amount of time spent with different shooting positions, etc. Basically it was a class that, in essence, only taught students to disassemble, clean, reassemble, and zero their rifle. This is the reason that we chose to do this course as a two day class. Day one, for beginners, needs to be those basics of cleaning, field stripping, etc. However I wasn't satisfied after the one day course, and a lot of the other students shared my feelings. These students wanted to now put that basic knowledge to use, and build on it. I know that I am preaching to the choir here, but the AR-15 weapons platform is an extremely versatile and useful defensive rifle. Because of that, we are taking the second day to start going through the basics of tactical rifle use. This two day course will take you from someone who is relatively new to AR-15's, to someone who has a better understanding of how to effectively use this system than most individuals that you may be facing in a deadly force encounter. This is a long winded reply, but my personal feeling is that 250 rounds, to make sure that your rifle is zeroed to you, and then to receive the training to make you proficient with it is absolutely reasonable. I welcome your comments though.
    • Classes are for the wealthy
      • My personal view of this is that classes are for those to whom self improvement and their personal safety is a priority. It's only through practice and instruction that we can hope to improve. When we improve, we greatly increase our chances of survival when faced with a deadly force encounter. I know that classes are expensive, but I strongly urge everyone to take them, even if they aren't from myself or my company. Make your personal safety, and the safety of those you care about a priority, because when the SHTF, no one else will.
      • PFPI makes every attempt to not only price our courses fairly, but also to give back to the shooting community as a whole. Enrollment in this class will automatically gain you membership at the Hudson Rod and Gun club, or if you're already a member, we will donate towards your renewal for next year. This is done for two reasons.
        • For those who live close enough to use this facility, it is a nice bonus.
        • For those who are too far away from Hudson to use this facility with any regularity, you are still contributing to the continued success of an outdoor firing range. We all know how quickly the number of outdoor ranges is dwindling, and so by signing up every student for a membership, we are increasing their numbers, increasing their operating funds, and doing our part to make sure that a wonderful facility doesn't fall victim to the anti-gun culture that is gaining more ground every day. PFPI is absolutely dedicated to doing our part in order to maintain the facilities that are currently available, and hopefully create new ones as well.
      • I could list off all the expenses that go into putting on a course (and will if requested to), but at the end of the day we are not making much money off this at all. Yes, PFPI is a business, and as such does need to see a little bit of income, but we are not here to price gouge our fellow gun owners. In fact, PFPI will continue to put on this course, even if we don't get enough students to break even. Our first priority is to education and safe gun handling. We are willing to take a sligh loss in order to promote this cause.
    • MagPul's DVD
      • In theory, a lot can be learned from watching a DVD, however those skills are never implanted into you until they have been practiced repeatedly. Also, the likelihood that people will not have proper technique increases dramatically when there isn't any personal instruction. Are you really going to bring a portable DVD player with you to the range so that you can watch and re-watch the instruction? Most likely not. What usually happens in this situation is that the DVD is watched hours, days, or sometimes even weeks before the individual goes to the range to practice these techniques. Do you really think this makes for solid instruction and tactical training? Your opinions may vary from mine, but I personally feel there is no substitute for in-person instruction.
    • Classes in other areas
      • As hauling4you mentioned earlier, this is the first of many classes that PFPI will be conducting. Our current plan is to extend the range that we cover, and hopefully bringing classes to several different parts of Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and the Dakotas. If you have special requests for courses or locations, please feel free to contact us at info@pfpitraining.com and I will be more than happy to do what I can to accomodate the request. We will keep you posted as other classes in Wisconsin are offered.
I think I've gone on long enough, but hopefully this helped clarify our position on several of the issues that were brought up. If you have further questions or comments, I'll keep an eye on this thread, but please feel free to email me as well.

This particular course is still open, and we would love to see more of you on the 19th and 20th.

    -Nathan
