I am originally from PA, but live in WY now, and am coming to PA to visit family. I will be open carrying same as I do here and want to make sure that there aren't any laws that are going to trip me up while I'm there. I have looked on hangunlaw.us and did not see anything that will concern me, and I do have a CWP from WY which PA does honor, but don't plan to CC unless circumstances somehow dictate a need. I will be in Erie, Warren, and Sugar Grove for sure. Is there anything that you think that I need to know before I get there snd find out the hard way? I thought to ask because my aunt told me that my 15 year old daughter who has a Drivers Permit here in WYCANNOT drive in PA because she is not 16, and the State Police confirmed it and would not discuss federal law concerning PA honoring aVALID drivers permit. Anyway back on topic; Anything that I need to know about carrying in PA?

Download and print out a copy of the Pa. Open Carry flyer here: http://paopencarry.org/pdfs/PennsylvaniaGunRights.pdf

Your Wyoming CWP (Concealed Weapon Permit) is equally as good as a Pennsylvania LTCF (License to Carry Firearms).

To open carry (except in Philadelphia) no license/permit is necessary. A license/permit is required for the following:

  • To carry concealed.
  • To carry in Philadelphia.
  • To carry in a vehicle.
  • To carry during a declared state of emergency.
Places you cannot carry:

  • Federal buildings.
  • Secured areas of airports.
  • Court facilities.
  • School property.
  • Certain state buildings operated by the Department of State.
  • Casinos.
Places you can carry (open or concealed):

  • Churches.
  • Bars.
  • Public gatherings.
  • State parks (must be concealed).
  • County/local parks.
  • County/local municipal government buildings.
Concerning your daughter, minimum driving age is 16, and there's no getting around that. Pennsylvania does not have to honor a Wyoming license if the operator is underage (it's an interstate compact, and is subject to interstate agreements with one another).

Thanks for the response and I have saved although not yet printed out the flyer. I have als otold my daughter that although she can legally drive all the way to PA, she can not drive while we're there. Sometimes watching a 15yr old pout can be hilarious!! ;)

I have a 15 year old cousin.

There is zero way I could imagine her behind the wheel. It's a terrifying thought, in fact.

Don't know for certain if that's legal, either. You'll have to check the individual state laws all the way in between Wyoming and Pennsylvania.

I have checked with every state on the way across, andEXCEPT for PA, all have said that they will honor any VALID License or permit regardless of the operators age.

My daughter has been driving my 1-ton diesel for months. No complaints. It's all in the attitude and training.

Somewhat related to 15-year-olds not being able to drive in Pennsylvania, minimum age for a license in New York is 16, likewise with Connecticut and New Jersey. Minimum age, however, for New York City is 18. Every year kids under 18 from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut get snagged by New York City cops. Someone from back home has to come down to drive the car home.

Somewhere in the back of my faded memory, I remember carrying in a casino not being against the law, or at most, a summary offense. I can find some info on that if nobody has a cite handy.

Also, I think the school carry issue is not as clear cut as "no carry". The statute states "....any other lawful activity". It could be argued that self defense is a lawful activity. Since you have no real need to be in a school while visiting PA, I think your better off not giving the school carry thing a try.

Casino carry is a summary offense. It's found somewhere in Pa. Code, not Pa. Statutes.

Likewise, State Park carry is a summary offense, also found in Pa. Code, not Pa. Statutes. However, change to the Pa. Statute overruled that part of the Pa. Code prohibiting carry in State Parks by making concealed carry with an LTCF legal.

Pa. Code also prohibits carry on ATVs or snowmobiles.
