This should have been front page news!

HAMPTON - Police: Man attacked relatives, officerA man was charged with violating a protective order, assaulting family members who tried to intervene and then going after a responding police officer with a butcher knife.

About 11:45 p.m. Friday, John Michael Hamm, 35, of Tupelo Circle, entered a rear window of his in-laws' house on Yorkshire Drive so he could see his 13-year-old stepdaughter, said Hampton police spokeswoman Allison Quinones.

But there was a protective order in place preventing him from seeing the girl.

Combative and drunk, Hamm then assaulted his mother-in-law, 50; father-in-law, 58, who awoke to the commotion; and female cousin, 17, Quinones said. Then Hamm's mother, 56, arrived, and he was fighting with her on the floor when a police officer arrived.

Hamm then went after the officer with a chair, Quinones said. After the officer commanded him to put it down, "the suspect ran into the kitchen, where he grabbed a butcher knife and came back at the officer again threatening to kill him," she added.

Another officer arrived, and they convinced Hamm to put down the knife. He is charged with attempting to maim a police officer, four counts of assault and battery and one count of violating a protective order. The injuries to all the parties were minor, Quinones said.

Too bad the officers didn't end the families ploblem. Now they will all be back in court again and he will probably be back on the street again yet with another protective order issued.
