Just saw something in the news that said that there are no major grocery store chains in the city of Detroit...

    is that true?

I do think that is true. I seem to recall a story about a year or so ago that talked about the "last store" leaving the city limits, don't recall which chain though...

I'm kind of suprised that no-one has tried to move into that wide open market. Bummer.

I remember when Farmer Jack closed all it's Detroit stores a few years ago. I was working downtown for Henry Ford Health System at the time and I remember some local folks who were besides themselves. I recall one lady saying she drove 30 min for a grocery store and that was longer than the drive to work...talk about role reversals.

I'm not sure what they do anymore, but hopefully folks have learned to take advantage of the farmers' market at Eastern Market.

There is a couple of grocery stores in the City, but they are not one of the large chain stores. Never been in one, but drive by the one on Gratiat all the time.

The story I saw online showed armed guards standing by while a truck with groceries was unloaded at a locally owned grocery store. Now that's a rough neighborhood!

They just signed to open a Meijer in Detroit.
I wonder how OC'ers will be treated in a Meijer inside the city limits.
And I know of 3 Aldi grocery stores inside the city limits.
