Oh yeah, along US12 there are some absolutely huge elk herds. The deputy struck the elk near Packwood along US 12. I don't think I've ever been up near Rimrock Lake (which is only a few miles east of Packwood) and failed to spot at least a calf or cow elf.

That stretch of road is narrow and twisty with a relatively high speed limit. It's a dangerous stretch in the winter for obvious reasons and at night almost any time of the year because of the elk.
