Back on Uncle Sam's plantation
Star Parker- Syndicated Columnist

download

Six years ago I wrote a book calledUncle Sam's Plantation. I wrote the book to tell my own story of what I saw living inside thewelfare stateand my own transformation out of it.

I said in that book that indeed there are two Americas -- a poor America on socialism and a wealthy America on capitalism.

I talked about government programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Job Opportunities andBasic Skills Training(JOBS), Emergency Assistance to NeedyFamilies with Children(EANF),Section 8 Housing, andFood Stamps.

A vast sea of perhaps well-intentioned government programs, all initially set into motion in the 1960s by Democrats, that were going to lift the nation's poor out of poverty.

A benevolentUncle Samwelcomed mostly poor black Americans onto the government plantation.. Those who accepted the invitation switched mindsets from "How do I take care of myself?" to "What do I have to do to stay on the plantation?"

Instead of solvingeconomic problems, government welfare socialism created monstrous moral and spiritual problems -- the kind of problems that are inevitable when individuals turn responsibility for their lives over to others.

The legacy of American socialism is our blighted inner cities, dysfunctional inner city schools, and broken black families.

Through God's grace, I found my way out.It was then that I understood what freedom meant and how great this country is.

I had the privilege of working onwelfare reformin 1996, which was passed by a Republican controlled Congress.

I thought we were on the road to moving socialism out of our poor black communities and replacing it with wealth-producingAmerican capitalism.

But, incredibly, we are nowgoing in the opposite direction.

Instead of poor America on socialism becoming more like rich American on capitalism, rich America on capitalism is becoming like poor America on socialism.

Uncle Sam has welcomed our banks onto the plantation and they have said, "Thank you, Suh."

Now, instead of thinking about what creative things need to be done to serve customers, they are thinking about what they have to tell Massah in order to get their cash..

There is some kind of irony that this is all happening under our first black president on the 200th anniversary of the birthday ofAbraham Lincoln.

Worse, socialism seems to be the element of our new young president. And maybe even more troubling, our corporate executives seem happy to move onto the plantation.

In an op-Ed on the opinion page of theWashington Post, Mr. Obamais clear that the goal of his trillion dollar spending plan is much more than short termeconomic stimulus.

"This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending -- it's a strategy for America's long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, healthcare, and education."

Perhaps more incredibly, Obama seems to think that government taking over an economy is a new idea. Or that massive growth in government can take place "with unprecedented transparency and accountability."

Yes, sir, we heard it fromJimmy Carterwhen he created theDepartment of Energy, the SynfuelsCorporation, and the Department of Education.

Or how about theEconomic Opportunity Act of 1964-- TheWar on Poverty-- whichPresident Johnsonsaid "...does not merely expand old programs or improve what is already being done. It charts a new course. It strikes at the causes, not just the consequences of poverty."

Trillions of dollars later, black poverty is the same. But black families are not, with triple the incidence of single-parent homes and out-of-wedlock births.

It's not complicated. Americans can acceptBarack Obama's invitation to move onto the plantation. Or they can choose personal responsibility and freedom.

Does anyone really need to think about what the choice should be?

"The trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out ofother people's money.":cuss:

Well, what do you want to bet that every liberal-schmiberal wet dream like "cap and tax" and the "health care reform" bills will be retitled "The Edward Kennedy Memorial (insert name of legislation) Act" and boy you can just imagine the floor speeches during debate....

Man. Where are my hammer and stake?....

Load of horse@#$% with no real point or facts to back its non-existant point. Not surprisingly we get a link and dash from an OP looking for pats on the back and nut rubbing, not areal discussion of anything. Not even remotely gun related.

Good read, PFW. It's quite apparent to anyone who isn't deluded that the rise of socialist programs and ideals in this country has went a long way to us ending up where we are today. You DO eventually run out of other people's money, because eventually you have nobody actually PRODUCING anything.....no producer class, no work to leech off of. This is where we are going. The few that still are part of the producer class are finding out that it's a great deal to quit their job and live off the government teat. They probably know it's unsustainable and will destroy the country, but they figure they will be taken care of for the rest of their life and then won't have to worry about the aftermath that we leave the following generations. It's pure selfishness, plain and simple. The selfishness that pervades our country these days and will ultimately lead to our ruin and downfall.

Yea, definitely. I can't wait to quit my $80,000/year job to live off $10,000/year in welfare and food stamps. My standard of living won't have to change at all. :quirky:banghead:

Also, define "producer class." Last I checked, the "producer class" is middle and lower income people. :quirky:quirky:quirky

As for hating socialist programs. How's your percentage based income tax doing? Would you prefer to pay your fair share of ~$36,000/year?

If not to disucss the suggestions (because it made no real point) made in the article... then what's the point of the thread? Is anything that's not like-minded, ignorant dick stroking considered trolling?

Here's a link, in case anyone is interested.

http://townhall.com/columnists/StarParker/2009/02/09/back_on_uncle_sams_plantation

The article was published in February 2009.

By the way, I found this paragraph to be particularly insightful (emphasis is mine):

Instead of solving economic problems, government welfare socialism created monstrous moral and spiritual problems. The kind of problems that are inevitable when individuals turn responsibility for their lives over to others.
Makes perfect sense... if someone else is responsible for feeding, housing, clothing, and educating me, why should I be responsible for anything else I might choose to do?

What you have never heard of Clayton Bigsby?

But seriously though, something I don't understand is how she can be arguing against social welfare programs when it was exactly that that helped her out of her situation...?

Wow this lady has some excellent columns out there:

Star Parker's Biography

The story of Star Parker is a stunning chronicle of how she left the seductive life of drugs, crime, abortions and welfare abuse through the power of the Gospel to become a leading advocate for the family. She is at the forefront of the Christian conservative movement to motivate and lead others away from the lies of the culture to a life full of grace and truth.

Star Parker is the founder and president of CURE, the Coalition on Urban Renewal & Education, a 501c3 non-profit think tank that provides a national voice of reason on issues of race and poverty - in the media, inner city neighborhoods, and public policy.

In addition to heading CURE, and its network of inner city clergy nationwide, Star is a syndicated columnist for Scripps Howard News Service, offering weekly op-eds to more than 400 newspapers worldwide.

As a social policy consultant, Star Parker gives regular testimony before the United States Congress, and is a national expert on major television and radio shows across the country. Currently, Star is a regular commentator on C-Span, MSNBC, and FOX News. She has debated Jesse Jackson on BET; fought for school choice on Larry King Live; and defended welfare reform on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Star Parker’s personal transformation from welfare fraud to conservative crusader has been chronicled by ABC’s 20/20; Rush Limbaugh; Readers Digest; Dr. James Dobson; The 700 Club; Dr. George Grant; the Washington Times; Christianity Today; Charisma, and World Magazine. Articles and quotes by Star have appeared in major publications including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and The New York Times. Recently she co-hosted an episode of The View with Barbara Walters, and her testimony went around the world on the television show of the Reverend Billy Graham.

Star has written three books, “Pimps, Whores, and Welfare Brats” (1996), "Uncle Sam’s Plantation” (2003), and “White Ghetto” (2006), works in Washington, DC, resides in Southern California and has a beautiful two year old grandson, Mr. James.

Reminds me of the Fox News clip: "No one helped me when I was on was on welfare and food stamps!!! Where was the government to help me then???"

PJ, "Clayton Bigsby" was a FICIONAL character...

I know liberals have a hard time with reality and all, look at how stylez is programmed.

The welfare "safety net" was supposed to be exactly that. Not a hammock. The welfare might have help sustain her life, but SHE GOT HERSELF OUT OF THAT SITUATION. Lots of people do, but their story doesn't fit the leftist agenda, so you don't hear about it.

One of my favorite movies however is "Pursuit of Happiness", with Will Smith. Based on a true story, about a guy who struggled, for over a year, ended up homeless, but still pressed on. He didn't blame anyone else, and didn't complain about fairness. It's a great American success story, I suggest you watch it.

Does anyone believe moveon.org pays stylez that much for sitting in his mother's basement on a pi$$ soaked matress to irritate us?
