For me, of course, it's Virginia. The general ambiance reminds me of my native Indiana and my boyhood home of Ohio. The seasons are distinct yet mild for the most part. Here in Northern Virginia, it is for the most part very cosmopolitan and one meets a lot of interesting people; and the liberal-schmiberal political bent of the region is largely blunted by Richmond. We do have to put up with Congressman James "Bugs" Moran for the time being; but he may well be on his way out. I am convinced we will have a Republican governor in a couple months, and the City Council in Alexandria now contains two conservatives; and a young liberal knowitall was just voted out on his butt a few months ago.
AND there is a lot of money around here. 'course that translates to high rent, etc; but I am not homeless and not starving so I would say even the negatives are pretty good.
Great hunting and fishing are just a quick spin away, and there are plenty of places to enjoy nature even inside the Beltway. And the evtire region is just saturated in history.
If I had to move to another OC GS State it would probably be North Carolina, maybe around Raleigh or wherever I could find some great 'cue. Vermont is about three blankets too far north for me and also a bit too socialist. Arizona would be nice except all the damn rattlesnakes Reb chased off his place might wanna move into mine. Alaska - well, the Land of the Midnight Sun sounds great until you realize that half the year it is also the land of the Noonday Moon. Plus there are those extra blankets to worry about.
SO. Which OCGS State would be YOUR fantasy home and why?
