"No Guns Allowed" sign small Wyoming town

There’s a “No Guns Allowed” sign, on a small restaurant in Moorcroft, Wyoming !

This restaurant has been very gun friendly in the past; in fact, the whole town is gun friendly from my personal experience. As far as I can tell, the wearing of a personal defense weapon is viewed as ordinary by most residents there.

Why then, is there a “No Guns Allowed” sign on the business ? A little research and a few questions brought out this story. A couple, identity unknown, open carried their holstered pistols into the restaurant, then during their stay, proceeded to pull the guns out of the holsters and “play” with them. The “play” was considered to be unsafe by others in the place, so the management felt that they must take some action to deter this sort of thing in the future. The management of the restaurant is still gun friendly, but felt they needed to do something. (maybe their response should have been to toss the couple out on their ears ?)

My main thought with this posting is meant to be a caution to anyone carrying a personal defense weapon, a special caution to those who are new to packing a weapon, whether carried openly or concealed. Keep the pistol in its holster, keep the big defensive knife in your pocket and keep the rifle slung. Keep your hands away from your weapons, don’t pat them, rest your hands on them or snap the blade in and out idly. Keep the weapon in its safe place UNLESS you have determined that you need to use your weapon to defend your life or the life of another person. Practice your defensive actions on the range or another safe place.

Another way to consider this is to put yourself in the position of those people around you while you are casually displaying your weapon, if the muzzle of your gun is pointing at them, they might feel compelled to defend themselves, even though your actions are simply thoughtless and ignorant.

I posted the note to remind us (including ME) that we need to get out there and open carry, but we do need to have consideration for other folks. "Consideration" meaning the same thing that mom meant when she warned us to be polite to folks.

Now, GET-OUT-THERE and open carry, I do :D

The only reason to pull your weapon out of its holster in public if you are not preparing to defend your life is if you are AT A PUBLIC RANGE. OH LORD my head hurts. These people were one or several of the following:

(1) From some place like the Balkans where weapons get pulled out in public all the time;

(2) Absolute complete fatheaded idiots who need to be institutionalized OR

(3) a pair of antis with replicas trying to stir up anti-gun sentiment

Frankly, my money is on choice # (3). How else are you going to stir up antigun sentiment in Wyoming, of all places?

Thoughtless and ignorant get people killed all sorts of ways, be it behind a wheel, working with electricity or power tools, and with their own guns. People like those have been breeding for too long. Shooting them should be justified when they "thoughtlessly" play with guns.

#3 doesn't sound even remotely probable. You're

for something impossible...

From the spare description, it sounds like a goof with a gun situation times two. The gun carry and open carry communities have a few of those....unfortunately.

"a pair of antis....." In Wyoming!

That cracks me up this fine morning. Thanks for the chuckle, AC.

Unfortunately... there is no shortage of idiots. I would offer that neither of these two were'locals' or from anywhere OCis theaccepted norm. These were 'new toys'... and not having any sort of cultural background with firearms... they decided to play with them. Something tells me they werefrom back east, but maybe not. What they were doin' is 'brandishing'... and rather than ban firearms in the restaurant for everyone...I would have done one of two things.

Thrown them out on their ear immediately.

Called the Sheriff 'n had 'em arrested.

  • were not locals
  • were not real OCers
  • considered the guns 'new toys'
  • had no firearm culture
  • played with guns
  • were Easterners
  • were non-Easterners
  • ....
SR, don't hesitate....to make them....anything you want to...

It's your world. You hold the power to make them anything.

They were probably behind in theircar payments too...

Easy there, Pardner... We OC in Virginia and no one I know has ever brandished their pistol here. Most OCers here know how to carry theirpistol and don't mess with it. Perhaps one of those fruits or nuts from WEST of you...

There was some asshat near DC recently that ventillated his SUV, but he was probably a "goof with a gun" that was planning to rob the place he was approaching.

PackininVB brandished in, I think it was, Lynnhaven Mall.

He did it to some young woman who was, uhm, threatening to him. (She might have had a knife or some such....)

But don't forget, in Virginia, brandishing is not against the law if you are "engaged in excusable or justifiable self-defense". See § 18.2-282.

She was no threat. Just some 18 year old wench who was arguing with him and his girl friend. Young PIVB just did some, ahem, dumb stuff in presenting his pistola....

It was really a bad one. He almost got arrested, IIRC.

I believe you missed the 'but maybe not.' modifier to thatstatement. But then... you're from 'Joisey'... so that's understandable. You can't carry a firearm openly... and perhaps never have beyond your own doorway.

What were you 'n your sister doing in Moorcroft, Wyoming,Hank?

Wait a minute guys.

Acouple ofmonths ago there was a guy posting on this forum from somewhere California. He and his wife were all amped up about their recent trip to Wyoming and how they open carried everywhere, so much so that they were going to move to Wyoming. He posted lots of pictures of them in all sorts of places. It was actually a little bit strange and over the top. He seemed like the kind of guy who would beover enthusiastic and do the things that caused the ban like fondling in public.

I vote for them being the ones who caused the problem. What say you?

How sad! I mean really, how sad that a store owner in Wyoming felt they needed to punish EVERYBODY because two yahoos were being idiots. I thought Wyoming was one of the last best places in this country where one could go and still be free. Yet, apparently they too have succumbed to the ravages of political correctness and the false arguements of "we had to do something." All Wyomingers (?) should protest this store and their socialistic response to personal responsibility and punishment.

Am I the only one who is sick and tired of being punished and having my rights trampled on because someone else behaves badly?! At some point this madness must stop.

Just to be clear, IIRC, the gun didn't leave it's holster. He was CC'ing and pulled his jacket back trying to be a tough guy. I'm not saying that isn't or can't be defined as brandishing, but it stayed in it's holster.

A few years back some of the drivers decided on a city-wide job action (strike) and sent a goon squad around to tell me not t0o work that day because "we know where you live". I opened my jacket and said "come on over. Old Betsy would love to welcome you".

End of threat.

I do believe you are correct, H024. Of course, MSG's point is dispelled nonetheless. Someone in VA did, in fact, brandish away. The sad thing IIRC is that he thought he was in the right because the woman might have had something on her. The woman had a big mouth, was 5' 4" and he was 6' 4" or so.

He was properly chastised by most here, I recall.I don't know if he ever "got it." It was prollybefore MSG's time on OCDO.
