I recently called the Airport Police Department and had a lengthly and civilized discussion with the on duty dispatcher. I asked the question "what is the MSP airport policy on carrying a firearm with a permit as long as you do not attempt to go through a screening checkpoint?" after being put on hold for several minutes I was told 'they allow legal carrying of firearms in the non-secure areas of the airport' the dispatcher then paused for a second and told me this as well "however we recommend you do not carry while at the airport because it could cause a big scene and panic" he made sure i knew that the process was just the same as anywhere else. where they would call and verify the permit and all that just like anytime an officer felt the need to validate a permit.

there was more to the conversation but it was mostly rephrasing and re-asking of the same things.

non-secure means areas like ticketing level(outside security), baggage claim level, ground transport center, parking garages, light rail transit station and transit hub.

to idiot proof this: if you get in a line at the airport and you are carrying a firearm. chances are you are gonna be in the wrong. so don't carry if you are flying that day. please follow airline and federal regulations regarding the transport of a firearm aboard a plane.

I recommend ONLY carrying at the airport if you are picking someone up or dropping them off AND not escorting them through a federal security checkpoint. keep in mind that the air transportation sector is at threat level orange while the rest of the nation is at threat level yellow. be smart those are federal charges if you oops it at an airport.

TSA Week At A Glance:
09/14/09 To 09/20/09
25 firearms found at checkpoints (nationwide)

this happens on a weekly basis. Be smart and follow the rules.
