Open Carry for Vegas/Clark County

Hello everyone,

I don't know if this topic has ben posted already, but this is the exact answer I received from a Metro detective in the special services/organized crime unit. I simply asked if I could open carry my pistol.


Our Section does not deal with firearms unless it is involving a business. That being said, as a Police Officer and Citizen, this is how I interpret NRS (Nevada Revised Statutes) regarding concealed weapons. http://www.leg.state.nv.us/NRS/NRS-202.html#NRS202Sec350





As far as a City of Las Vegas and Un-Incorporated Clark County (North Las Vegas, Henderson, ect… can enact more restrictive codes), as long as it is not concealed and can readily be recognized as a firearm, and as long as it’s not a prohibited place (Post Office, Court House, ect… or restricted by owner of private property), as a police officer I interpret open carry of handgun is lawful. Taking into account also of the restrictions of prohibited persons (by US Code), mentally ill, intoxicated persons ect.

From tales posted by various 'n sundry... on this forum: Expect to get jacked by the Vegas PD if you OC. They may know what the 'law' is... but they don't care. It's a wonder they haven't been sued blind yet... but that seems to be the case. They don't like it. The casino owners don't like it 'n that's where the $$$$ is. I though LVMPD only had problems with OC on the strip. I am going to Vegas to visit a friend who lives north of Summerlin and I am taking a CCW class while I am there so I can get a CCW permit. My plan was to OC while I am there but I may rethink it if the Metro Cops are going to hassle me. I don't have the time to get in a legal entanglemt due to the fact I'm only there 5 days. Not to mention the money.

5 years now, never been detained, harassed, questioned, bothered, etc, by las vegas police.

Just moved out of Vegas, but for the several years I OC'd there, I never had a problem with LVMPD, though I generally concealed when on the Strip or at a mall just to avoid the potential hassles. You're best off reading through the Nevada portion of the boards for specifics, but as I understand it, all Metro officers are now having to go through mandatory training regarding open carry. Hopefully that will have some impact on those officers that may have given folks a hard time in the past due to ignorance of the issue.

What movie was it I saw many moons ago...

A guy dressed up "Cowboy style" on the strip always getting hassled by the LEOs and had to show them an empty cylinder on both his shiny 6 shooters before they would let him go. LEOs even made some comment about how they all knew the guns had to be empty to be legal. At the end of the movie he pulled some live rounds out of his pocket, loaded up, and Saved The Day by dispatching some BGs. IIRC there was a boy in peril. Dang I wish I could remember the name of that movie!

I lived in North Las Vegas for three years. I never had a problem with open carry, but I steered clear of the strip unless I was concealed.

You should remember that people from all over the world come to Vegas, some from countries where guns are strictly taboo. The strip is so heavily patrolled and with gazillions of cameras, that you're quite safe on the strip proper. If you must carry on the strip, save some poor foreigner from a heart attack and just go concealed, but only if you have a permit. They're neither difficult to obtain nor expensive.

I refuse to compromise my preferred method of carry for someone else's "comfort." With all the patrol on the strip, I guess no one has ever been mugged or attacked either...

It's not an issue of you having any problems. It's an issue of you causing causing unnecessary distress in others who may not be reasonably aware of firearms rights in the US. Please note this does not include either LEOs or residents of the US, as they should be fully aware of OC rights, and shame on 'em if they're not!

If that's not your concern, then by all means carry on. In fact, someforeigners coming to the U.S. are disappointed when they don't see Americans carrying guns all over the place! LoL...

I've been 'accosted' by foreign tourists in the most unlikely places... truckstops, rest stops, gas stations... even parkin' lots 'n asked if they could have their photo taken with a gun-totin''cowboy'. A pair of German girls thoughtI might'a been a 'movie star' (I'm not makin' this up) at a truck stop near Eloy. (I clean up good) 'Even more surprised when I spoke to them in German. 'Floored' would be a better word. They took a BUNCH of pictures.The 'open' presence of guns doesn't seem to alarm them at all... not so much as I've experienced from my fellow Americans.

'Happend again 'bout an hour ago. I'm following a travel van down a remote road here... 'n it's goin' slow. 'German plates!' 'Pair of German tourists and their dog... They pulled over, so I pulled up beside 'em 'n asked if they were lost. They were looking for the 'Rocks with pictures'... (oh my) Well... 'splained all that to 'em and gave 'em directions to the Desert Museum... but this bein' Sunday evening that closed, so 'told 'em how to get out of here 'n back to Marana where they could find a motel. Well... the 'wife' wanted my picture... or rather her and I.... An American 'cowboy' with a pistol. They didn't run screamin' into the desert when they saw the gun.Not even a wince.

I have no idea what that van cost to ship here... and the dog... but they were from Berlin... city people. I suppose runnin' into a German speakin' cowboy in the Arizona boonies freaked 'em out! Their expressions were priceless. What are the odds of that?

The only ones that I noticed that was taken back was some "thug" looking characters with buggy clothes. Oh, and there was a Indian/Hindu looking man who's eyes got pretty big as we walked by him and his family as he was setting in his car trying to pull out onto LV blvd.:what:

Other than that hardly any of the tourist even noticed.
