I just found out that my neighbor had a daytime attempted burglary last Sunday afternoon at 12:30.

I was in Haymarket helping my brother paint his porch at the time and had no idea this had happened.

They were out of town, the alarm system notified the police, the bad guy was nowhere to be found.

He got in a side garage door and bent the heck out of their entryway strike plate trying to get into the house.

WTF?????

This stuff does NOT happen here, much less in the middle of the friggin' day. We have a tight neighborhood, have holiday block parties, I occasionally watch their kids, and the neighbor on the other side of them is a friggin' DC cop. The guy broke in the side door clearly visible from the cop's house.

I don't usually carry around the house, as I prefer to wear sweats while at home. But the G27 is now nearby. Time to get a shoulder holster for home.

Is this a sign of the economic times or what???

Would I be snarky if I said it was a sign ofa DC cop? Probably so.

I'd go more with a sign of the economic times plus so good advance recon - your neighborhood sounds to be deserted during the day - like most others in the country.

Good strike plate does wonders at keeping out intruders, as long as the screws are in deep enough. Same goes for the hinges.

Although a shoulder holster is an option wearing sweats, so is a belt. Using a shoulder holster requires lots of additional practice both on the draw and getting to the firing position. Unfortunately most ranges do not allow draw&fire from shoulder holsters.:(

stay safe.

It's just the natural progression and evolution of a nice neighborhood into a ghetto, which then will be bought out by some big developer and "revitalized" into a new suburbia. Best sell your house now while decent folk are still willing to buy :^).

House is already on the market, I bought a place in Louisa last week.

Current house isa knock-down.

Total price for property and new construction is $1,000,000.

Not quite the ghetto...yet .

There is an apartment complex of undocumented voters about 1 mile up the road.

But they've been there for a while and we've had no problems so far.

He already used them once. Of course he'll use them again. Reminds me of the Undocumented voters and even the DEAD that voted for Sheila Jackson Lee in Houston. She was elected by criminals (from prison), illegal aliens and people that had been dead for a long time. She even rents busses to transport the homeless to the polling places. Of course these citizens are taught how to use the voting machines on the way. They also get a Happy Meal for their troubles! Isn't that civic minded of the Congresswoman???

back OT: Sad to hear that about Vienna. I remember driving up 123 from Fairfax to see the tree inside the house. You locals will know what I'm talking about. Sometimes I miss living in Fairfax; but only SOMETIMES...

Gotta give all the socialists credit for being smart. Otherwise they would have died out a long time ago. Some of them are as charismatic as Jim Jones. The current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave comes to mind...:banghead:

Dunno about Vienna, but I live in Fairfax County just outside the Falls Church city limits (about 3-4 miles from Vienna, IOW). So far this year:
  1. In January we had a home invasion/attempted rape about 2 blocks from my house
  2. About 2 months ago a fellow shot and killed his ex, then holed up with his current GF and son. He finally killed himself the next day. This was about 8 blocks from my house.
  3. Last month, I think, there was a home invasion/assault about 5 blocks away.
  4. Interspersed with the above, we've had numerous thefts of tools from work vans, and thefts of airbags and various electronic gizmos, etc. from parked cars.
And this really isn't a "bad" neighborhood. Basically, nowhere is really a "safe zone"...

I live west of Richmond in a "nice" area called Short Pump. This summer, a neighbor had her door get kicked down and her place robbed. Thankfully, she and her son were not home and the neighbors behind saw it happen, calling the police immediately.

All summer we've had trouble with people knocking on doors for one reason or another. Some were bogus, others not, but in general no one is opening doors to strangers anymore. My husband had a guy claiming to sell security systems try to walk in on him. Thankfully the hubby was big enough and peeved enough to shove the guy back out.

A few weeks ago, two subdivisions over, may have had an attempted kidnapping. The guy backed his truck into her driveway and came around to the back door, then wanted her to come out for to try some air freshener he was selling. Thankfully she did not have to find out what he was up to as she refused to open the door or to contain her barking dog.

So now our door has a two-way intercom, no more answering it. And our guns are strategically placed to where we can quickly get to them. Hope we don't need to though.

I agree with SAvage410 - no place is truly safe these days.

Amen to that!

The only good socialist/communist is the one that lays on the ground and doesn't breathe.

Only takes once and doesn't have to happen directly to you. A day a few years back where FFPD was running thier helo over our house looking for a neighbor was what ultimately did it for me. And the burglery of my garage. And the armed break in the development next door with the family home. And the.....

Anywhere accessible by a car is definitely not safe.A gated community might be "safer" but still not totally safe.

15 years ago when I first moved into my house they caught people breaking in and followed them back to their home in Suffolk about 20-30 miles away.

2 years ago there were two armed robberies at the neighborhood we border against. No injuries but never caught the BG.

This and last summer people were taking objects from unlocked vehicles and unlocked garage doors. (guessing teenageers since they mainly took beer from garage refrigerators)

I carry at home and pretty much at all times thatI am not in the pool, hottub or shower. :)

Funny that a bunch of Latino organiztions got fired up and had Target take those off of the market.

I wonder why Latino organizations took offense??

Kinda like being in a crowded room, someone yells "Hey, A$$hole," and one guy at the back of the room gets angry. :cuss:

Who said I was talking about YOU????
