I received this email this morning from ODU. I go to that 7-11 all the time! It is a few blocks from my apt too.

    ODU Campus Safety Alert 10/30/09

    Reply|Falck, Michelle M.

The Norfolk Police Department has made us aware of two incidents involving students that occurred last night in the area concurrent to campus. At the 7-Eleven store on 52nd Street and Colley Avenue, a black male with a handgun exited a blue minivan and approached a student standing outside the store at approximately 10:45 p.m., robbing him of a knapsack and money. On Hampton Boulevard near Larchmont Elementary School, two black males approached a student at approximately 1 a.m. and asked to use his cellular phone. When the student refused, one of the suspects displayed a handgun and robbed him of his wallet. Neither student was harmed in the incidents. The police department would like to remind the campus community that an increase in the incidents of larceny is typical as the holiday season approaches and that extra care and precautions should be taken. Here are recommendations on how to keep yourself and your friends safe:
    • Familiarize yourself with the locations of emergency phones and call boxes in the buildings and around the campus routes you normally visit and walk. All campus buildings have red telephones that link directly to campus police. Additionally, there are blue emergency call boxes located around campus that also call directly to campus police.
    • Walk on well-lit paths and streets and walk with others, especially at night.
    • Use the campus escort service. It is available 5:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. weekdays and 8:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on weekends by calling 683-3477 or using one of the emergency telephones or blue light call boxes. Police officers are available to escort you after-hours.
    • Keep doors locked, including the doors to your dorm room, off-campus residence and car. Do not prop open any doors to the residence halls.
    • Do not invite strangers into your dorm room or off-campus house. While that person you just met at a party may seem really nice, he or she could have bad intentions.
    • Limit your drinking. Too much alcohol impairs your judgment and makes you less aware of your surroundings.
    • Do not leave your bicycle, laptop, iPod or other valuables unsecured and do not leave valuables in view in your vehicle. Do not leave holiday gift purchases in your car.
    • Report suspicious activity and situations to campus police. If you are a victim of crime, report it to police immediately.
The Police Department can be reached 24 hours a day, every day, by calling 757-683-4000 (3-4000 from a campus phone).

...and when seconds count, the police will be there in minutes!

there are two parts of self-defense. The obvious is defense. The less obvious is 'self'. The concept of self is being removed from a society that rewards the 'victims' more than theMEMBERS!

Hmmm....Funny how none of their recomendations are:

    • Arm yourself,be responsible for your own safety.

ROFL, ROFL, ROFL. Like the concept of firearms for personal self defense would ever reach a public institution of "higher" learning. (Hey, I can bash ODU, I graduated from there nearly 30 years ago.) They still have a serious martial arts program there so the perps need guns just in case they pick the wrong "prey". Getting too close could get plum dangerous you know.

Anyone seen the new "Broadview Security" commercials? Broadview used to be Brinks.

A woman is escorting guests out of her house and a gentleman waves goodbye. The woman's friend mouths "Who was that?" knowingly. The woman mouths back "I don't know" with an excited grin on her face.

She goes inside, arms the system and commences to doing dishes (or something in the kitchen) when the "gentleman" shows up at the back door. He kicks in the glass and forces the door open, immediately tripping the alarm.

Two seconds pass and the phone rings, a Broadview CSR calling to check and see if everything's OK. Of course the BG has run off and the CSR tells her police are on their way.

Alternate scenario: guy kicks in the glass and forces open the backdoor. Next scene is the police covering up the BG with a white sheet.

Fade to: "Another home invasion thwarted by the 2nd Amendment."

With SPRINT's new Friends and Family plan, you don't have to worry. If a robber wants to use or steals your phone, just dial 911. It won't cost you a dime and your peace of mind is our business. Just remember to dial 911 before he pulls out his gun so the police can catch them.

There are 8 weeks remaining until Christmas, and the typical turn-around time for a CCW is about 4 weeks, so avoid the Holiday rush, and apply for your license today!

Unfortunately SPRINT actually charges you $0.75 every time you dial 911. I call it often because I am an over-the-road truck driver and report a lot of drunk drivers, open beverages, and accidents.

As long as the driver is sober, the passengers (over 21) can have open containers in VA

    CRF,

Maybe we should have an OC Dinner around ODU. Pass out some pamphlets, tell students their school is a victim disarmament zone, eat some pizza.

Knowing what I know about how alcohol-related infractions are "investigated" and prosecuted in Virginia I'd almost rather run down the street waving a gun, shouting obscenities and threatening physical harm to public officials.

    I said almost.

University Pizza would be a good place. Not TOO close to campus but a few blocks away. I would suggest the pizza place across from campus, but that is REALLY iffy for me:shock:

I don't know how ODU is and I know it is your behind and not mine in that case, but FWIW I've open carried right across from GMU, even past a few GMU officers without any problems. They didn't even look twice.

I can see your concern though, I don't know if ODU has such definite 'borders' like GMU does where it is easy to know you're good or not.

It looks like that is considered campus from every map that I'm looking at??? This is the official campus map that is updated directly from the ODU website. There is green all around the building:what: http://www.odu.edu/oduhome/campusmap.shtml
