OC is quite legal in City Hall - state preemption and all that.

The "discussion" was about their extra legal rule regarding signing in for a public meeting.

Ha anyone gotten an opinion of the sign in rule from the FOIA Council?

On another point, are there any plans for a get together after the meeting?
Repeated requests have been made to the mayor's office and to the City Att'y. for explanation as to the source and legitimacy of such sign-in. Beyond having receipt of the correspondence, neither has elected to respond - totally ignored, months have gone by with periodic copies of previous requests forwarded.

A formal FOIA request would seem to be the only way that such information will be forthcoming. Suggest that we see what happens Monday - they are very aware of the problem.

I seem to remember a case on this specific issue being in violation of Va. Open Meeting law, but don't have it at hand today.

I am sure that we will find time to eat and debrief after the council meeting - no specific plans yet though.

I'll be there, as long as my burn pile is down to cinders in time.

I'm suprised about the sign-in sheet. You'd think they'd learn.
Maybe they figured when they took down the illegal gun ban that would
satisfy citizens. How dare we expect them to be accountable on all
liberties!

The sign in issue is more of a Life Safety issue than anything else at Richmond City Hall. Technically you are in the building after hours with permission. Should an emergency occur such as a fire or building collapse they will know how/who is in the building to evacuate/recover. Most if not all government buildings/large corporate campuses started a similar process after the Oklahoma City Federal Building Bombing.

As much as people want to think or make it something else issue, it is not.

And who gives that permission? Richmond City Council - don't think so. In fact it is a requirement of Open Meeting laws.

So if city council doesn't make the laws/rules governing our admittance there, who does?

Of course your right. And registration of firearms is just so we can trace firearms used in a crime. Look at other countries, its not like that was a prelude to taking guns from people.... oh wait, yes it was.

If the country keeps heading in a socialist direction do you not think, in 15 years, that sign-in sheet could be used as evidence that your an extremist?

I think it is something else, most definitely. It is a record of when and where I went and for what purpose. Some might decide to not attend because of the record keeping - thereby making it a form of intimidation.

The Capital Police tried just that at the GAB on Lobby Day several years ago and were immediately stopped from doing so. Is Richmond City Council more equal than the General Assembly?

If sign-in is required but ID is not, where is the validity even if such action were permissible? Va. citizens are not required to carry identification when OCing.

Could be a lot of John Does and John Q. Publics there. Not necessary for me though as my handwriting is already illegible. :)

It's the principle of it Kenny.

Just like a CHP. Life would be a lot easier if I would just go get a CHP. I don't need a class, just fill out the App and give them money. All done but the principle is bad.

Same reason I don't wear a seat belt. I always did until I was told I had to. Now I don't because of a medical condition or something like that. It would be easier to wear it. I wouldn't have to yank it over my shoulder when a cop gets too close (although I'd never break a law)

I always rode a Motorcycle with a helmet until the passed helmet laws. Sometimes it blows off or something now.

or blaze orange. If I wanted those damned dog hunters to know where I was, I'd send them an agenda....of course I wear it because I'd never knowingly break a law.

They did not enforce the "rule" with but a small fraction of the people last time. They have no record of those employees that might still be in the building either, thus negating their "its for your safety" thing.

Maybe we should be required to sign in at courtrooms, libraries and city parks too.:X
What is next in 10 years, GPS chips in all citizens? Don't laugh.

P.S. Hope to see a crowd tonight.

I'm all for everybody being treated the same way. I hate double standards.

I just told my Senators and Representative the same thing, I want the same health insurance plan that they have.

City Council can ask me, when I address them,to state whether I am a resident or not, as that has a great deal of bearing on any decision they make. Demanding to know my name andmy address before being allowed to enter the building is extremely chilling, as it suggests the possibility of being refused admittance based on some "watch list."

Based on history, I do not think I am being paranoid about the issue.

stay safe.

Currently in the meeting, seems that PVC and another
member (I appologize for not remembering your name)
mysteriously disapeared from the list of registered speakers
for tonight.

They DID however allow 4-5 speakers (including Lori Haas) in favor of the mayor.
Weird how that works...........
