One argument I saw and liked, which is along the same lines as that posted by the OP, to paraphrase:

Our 50 states need to have the ability to create social experiments through the passage of their own laws, so we have 50 micro-climates of law in which to find out what works best, without bad ideas impacting the nation as a whole. This is one thing that makes us great. However, the fourteenth amendment exists to guarantee a "minimum standard" of rights which are not subject to experimentation upon for any reason.
