Whereas the Founding Fathers of our Republic adopted the Bill of Rights to guarantee the protection of the common rights of citizens, andWhereas the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution states that “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”, andWhereas the plain meaning of the amendment has been well established over two centuries of American civil freedom by common usage, court decisions and Congressional reaffirmation, andWhereas the freedom of the American people to “keep and bear arms” has, in fact, been infringed upon by numerous federal statutes, court decisions and actions of the Federal Executive branch, andWhereas great concern among the American people has arisen over the prospect of further deterioration in their constitutional right “to keep and bear arms”, and Whereas members of the President’s Cabinet including the Attorney General have made numerous public statements supporting various means of further restricting the Constitutional rights of the American people to keep and bear arms, andWhereas numerous members of the Current 111th Congress, including key members of the Democratic leadership of the 111th Congress have called for legislation which have as their aim to further restrict the ownership, use and enjoyment of firearms by a free people and guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution, andWhereas the primary duty of the President of the United States is to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States”, I Thomas J. Cole, Congressman from the 4th District of Oklahoma, together with the undersigned citizens of the United States of America call upon the President of the United States Barack Obama to “faithfully execute the office of President of the United States in vetoing any legislation which further infringes upon the rights of the American people to “keep and bear arms”; and to direct that his Attorney General Eric Holder actively challenge, by administrative or legal means, any attempts to create by rule, legislation, order or other means on the part of any division or subdivision of the federal government or any division or subdivision of any state or municipal government, any further attempts to infringe the rights of the American people to “keep and bear arms”.
