HUNTINGTON BEACH – A 39-year-old man is being arraigned today in connection with an attack on a Huntington Beach resident, who was shot in the leg after a thief demanded his wallet, officials said.
Shawn Michael Espinoza was booked into Orange County jail and is charged with attempted murder, use of a firearm, attempted robbery, and street terrorism.

Man charged with attempted murder, theft to be arraigned
The victim was confronted outside of his home at 21200 block Banff Lane about 10 p.m. Dec. 4, police said. The robber asked for his wallet, saying the victim owned somebody money. When the victim refused, the robber shot him in the leg and fled the scene, a Huntington Beach police report said.
Police officers responded to the incident but were unable to locate the robber. Police determined the robbery was not a random incident but would not provide more details.
Police officers obtained an arrest warrant and, with the help of a SWAT team, arrested Espinoza on Dec. 10.
Espinoza pleaded guilty in 1995 for possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and assault and battery of a peace officer. About two years later he pleaded guilty to posession of controls substance with intent to sell.
In 2000 he pleaded guilty to a battery charge for an incident in 1997.
