When and why did open carry go away?

I had a pm conversation with a informed member about current gun law, and it got me thinking. What led to people disarming themselves, or rather becoming disarmed. a quick search landed me here. More evidence to support the pro-gun hypothesis, or dare I say conclusion.

What then led to our current debacle where we have to ask to carry either open or concealed?

The same thing that's led to the current government and the disregard for the constitution. The rising up of American liberalism. Day by day this country moves closer to the socialist plague of Europe. What comes with their socialist utopia is the government control of all firearms. As long as the people vote these type of people in office and those who can buy their votes (Bloomberg). The current government is a mix of socialists and communists (state-ists) and as long as these people change and shape our laws I expect the worst.

I agree with that. I think the candidates we should seek are those hell bent on repealing laws that restrict free activity. I think that as a country we need to remember that the federal government is really only here to protect us from outside (Foreign) threats, and to protect our God given right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Beyond that federal government is unconstitutional. Local government is supposed to handle all of the rest of the details.

But where did it start? [gun control] Where and when did the law start to turn that way. Where did the ani-gun croud start to chip away?

I think if we find an accurate history of when the "Wild West" days started coming to an end, we will find out. I would assume it probably had to do with more people relocating out west. They probably thought people that carried guns were "barbaric".

Or maybe when "police"departments starting becoming common place, that curbed OCing.

There are a few (quite literally) in congress that will, but most are seen in the eyes of their fellow congressmen/women and being nut jobs. Same goes for probably the majority of citizens. With the amount of people who rely on the nanny state for so much, electing candidates who support getting rid of the Dept of Ed, Social Security, Medicare, Dept of Homeland Security, and most other govt agencies/programs, is going to be tough.

Agreed, but we can stop this as parents. It is our duty. I was just going over the finer points of my Springfield .40 with my 6 yr old. Also, when he see's an american flag he says "God Bless America", and we were talking about the problems with socialized health care or any government run program earlier. We often talk about government control, and taxes that are WAY too high for our family.

Good job with your son! My parents did the same and I intend to myself when and if I have children.. However the sad fact remains that many children in the USA today do not have such forward thinking parents... or no parents at all...

i hate to say this...but all but one member of my family(incl. extended) is liberal and anti handgun,"assault rifle",carrying firearms concealed or otherwise...if it is not a "traditional sporting arm" then they scream that it is illegal at me and try to tell me whats what in they're mind.

needless to say i do not spend much time with my family due to our political differences, and my stance onpersonal protection, and almost everything else.

It isn't widely known but one of the first major tasks of the NRA was to make sure the newly freed men after the Civil War were allowed to arm themselves for protection & acquiring food.

My in-laws are "conseratives" and they all think I'm a "gun nut".

They don't "believe" there is a need for guns.

At least your relatives are honest about being liberals.

Back during the Y2K scare one of them was telling me about all he was doing in preparation for the "collapse of society". Generator, gasoline, drygoods, canned goods, etc., etc.

When he asked me what I was doing, my reply to him was "nothing".

Shocked he asked "You're not doing anything?"

I told him "Nope. I got guns. I'll just go around listening for generators running and take what I need."

You should have seen the look on his face.

Then he asked me if I thought he should get a shotgun.
