In Oregon you can shoot back in self-defense. I wonder if that holds true here in Moscow as well.
I asked the same question while at the Ada County class for CWL. The answer was a resounding "yes" from both officers who spoke up. There really isn't much of a difference between when they or we can shoot, the same criteria apply. They may have other department standards to follow, or be held to more scrutiny (or less in some cases), but legally we're held accountable under the same rules. "Rodney King" won't happen here again, God willing; we're missing two criteria. California cops and someone to be racist against. :)

Having to live in a county that borders WA is just what they told me over at the Whitman County Sheriffs office. I guess they were wrong, wouldn't be the first time a sheriffs office employee somewhere didn't know the law.

In Oregon you can shoot back in self-defense.  I wonder if that holds true here in Moscow as well.

Vandal:  What did you do to be graced with the presence of Moscow's.....finest?

The Oregon law is only valid in Oregon under very specific circumstances and any action by the suspect to "defend" himself will most likely be taken as further resistance. It was designed to keep the cops over there in line, but the first time its tried in court I will guarantee the cops will win.

As for me, I was escorted out of Safeway Monday evening about 1750 hrs by two Officers after a "manager" called in an MWAG. They arrived, we chatted, made fun of Safeway for violating my rights, talked guns and they made sure that I safely made it to my car:) There is a thread about it just below this one. The officers knew that I was legal, but the "manager" wanted them to escort me out because another customer complained.

I am going back today or tomorrow to chat with the store manager about the issue and how I was a customer too and how what happened to me is now on the web for the world to see.

Why would a CPL be required for that in Washington? Do you mean leave your loaded shotgun in the gun rack? That is still illegal in Washington, with or without a CPL:

RCW 77.15.460
Loaded firearm in vehicle — Unlawful use or possession — Penalty.

(1) A person is guilty of unlawful possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle if:

(a) The person carries, transports, conveys, possesses, or controls a rifle or shotgun in or on a motor vehicle; and

(b) The rifle or shotgun contains shells or cartridges in the magazine or chamber, or is a muzzle-loading firearm that is loaded and capped or primed.

(2) A person is guilty of unlawful use of a loaded firearm if the person negligently shoots a firearm from, across, or along the maintained portion of a public highway.

(3) Unlawful possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle or unlawful use of a loaded firearm is a misdemeanor.

(4) This section does not apply if the person:

(a) Is a law enforcement officer who is authorized to carry a firearm and is on duty within the officer's respective jurisdiction;

(b) Possesses a disabled hunter's permit as provided by RCW 77.32.237 and complies with all rules of the department concerning hunting by persons with disabilities.

(5) For purposes of this section, a firearm shall not be considered loaded if the detachable clip or magazine is not inserted in or attached to the firearm.
I stand corrected.:banghead: It was my impression that firearms must be transported in a locked, inaccessible container while in a vehicle unless you had a WA CPL.

I guess I will just have to stay on this side of the border more often.
