Why does it seem that many gun manufacturers are located in anti-gun states?

Springfield, Armalitein Illinois

Berretta in Maryland

Smith & Wesson (also Walther) in Massachusetts

Dan Wessonin New York
Granted the "state" became anti long after the manufacturer was there but it seems odd/ironic to me that the manufacturing states for these guns hate the manufacturer.

I know there are also gun friendly states & manufacturers like Glock in Georgia (even though GA won't reciprocate my CHP!!!) Has any of these manufacturers looked into moving to gun friendly states? Any others I missed?

With the states asserting their rights under the 10th ammendment for firearms manufactured "in-state" it seems we should be lobbying for these manufacturers to move to a state that has such a bill enacted into law. Virginia is working on such a bill so move HERE please!!!

I've noticed this and felt the same way for a while.  I think it's mostly for legacy reasons as you pointed out - the factories were there long before those states turned anti-gun.

I think there's some gun manufacturing in Massachussetts, too, if I'm not mistaken.
Connecticut has Colt and at least a few others.  For a Northeastern state, their gun laws aren't too "bad" but they could be better.

A biggie that comes to mind is Kimber in Yonkers New York... in fact, in the midst of this recession, their plans to expand their factory (good paying machinists' jobs) were turned down flat by the Yonkers City Council, if I recall correctly.

Edited to fix grotesque grammatical error (past tense)

I would have to go with Overtaxed, a matter of legacy.

The states and local governments within still willingly reap the benefits of the commercial/industrial property taxes as well as anything else the states deem taxable.

I've mentioned this before in another thread but a great example of legacy manufacturing in a hostile environment (still willing to take money from your profits) is the Jack Daniel's Distillery. It operates out of Moore County in Tennessee... a dry county. Ain't that something?

Even more odd is the fact that Taurus is in Brazil, which has the some of the worst gun laws (and worst criminals) in the world and almost banned guns entirely a few years ago.

Anytime Kimber, Colt, S&W, Beretta, Dan Wesson, Springfield or CZ wish to move lock-stock and personnel to Arizona, we would be more than glad to have 'em.

Not if North Carolina gets them first :)

We've got Para Ordnance in Charlotte and Remington in Madison.

Walther America's facilities are in Houlton, Maine.

Having said that, it must be noted that Herr Mayor of New York and Reich Protektor of Virginia Gruppenfuehrer Bloomberg doesm't kvetch about the states that make the weapons he seeks to ban. I bet if he got ten bucks for every gun sold in Virginia he would change his tune. Pols like B-Berg are after two things: Money and power. But they will take the money every time.

Actually, not quite. Gun ownership is actually a "big deal" in Brazil, a hot-button political issue.

I suspect the wealthy like to have guns to protect themselves against the rampant crime.

At any rate, hence Taurus. They have a decent local market.

What I don't understand is whywouldn't they open a secondary facility elsewhere? ...screw New York and Bloomberg...ifKimber wants to expand their operations, conduct machining operations elsewhere...heck, I'll even let them use my two car garage...it'll only cost thema Stainless Pro Raptor II for a oneyear lease :D!!!

Yeah, one of the main reasons Para moved to NC was because their previous headquarters (Ontario Canada) was making it impossible for them to do international business through Canada's increasingly oppressive gun-control laws.

But we're glad to have Para move to our state, and it makes it a LOT easier for Todd Jarrett (who lives in Southern VA) to visit the factory... ;)

One of these days I'm going to make the drive to Charlotte, and stop by their Pro Shop...

Why didn't I think of that. I prefer the stainless raptor II over the "pro" size but maybe they would let me test fire all the guns manufactured in my garage and keep 1 a month that I liked. Brilliant.

On the other hand, you have Ruger in Arizona and New Hampshire, Thompson/Center in NH, SIG in NH, STI in Texas, Wilson in Arkansas, Century Arms importing all those great milsurps into Vermont, Cooper in Montana, Barrett in Tennessee, and Olympic in Colorado.

Among many others.

we must reverse the question, and ask it again; why are all those anti gunners hanging around the gun factories?
I would say it's because an alarming number of people in this country don't feel complete unless they have something to bitch about. It could also be that firearms manufacturing, like tobacco manufacturing, can be raped repeatedly for the pet projects that a lot of anti's like to pursue beyond their gun stance without too much outcry or resistance.

You need to remember exactly what these sociopathic anti-gun control freaks are REALLY trying to accomplish. NONE of them want ALL guns banned. They just want guns to be out of the hand of the "wrong types" of people, which in their eyes are "people of color", and anyone who is not one of their "annointed" crowd of the super-rich/super-connected Socialist/Fascist One Worlders...

Bloomberg, for instance doesn't hate guns so much that he's banned them completely from NY--his personal guard detail is armed to the teeth. Babs Mikilski of MD and Diane Feinstein of CA BOTH have held Concealed Carry permits in their respective states. Sarah Brady has an armed personal bodyguard detail.

They don't REALLY hate guns. They just hate the idea that "common" citizens can own and bear arms. The idea of an armed populace scares them--and rightfully so--because it ensures that they can never fully effect their plans of total tyranny, world-wide serfdom of the "common people", and ensconce themselves in their ivory towers of high-tech utopia.

They actyally WANT these firearms manufacturers in their home states, so that when they start to implement their "final solutions", they will have ready access to the tools of their oppression, and more easily deny access to these tools for the common folk so that we can't defend our lives, our communities, and our Rights.

If you really LOOK into what makes these sick, sociopathic "officials" tick, it's all quite easy to understand...

Restrictive firearms laws create grey/black markets for firearms. That means more profits for the manufacturers. It's the same reason Marijuana is still illegal. Nobody profits more from infringements on liberty than the purveyors of the very products which are outlawed.
