Hi everyone,

I am attending CTU online for my BS in Information Technology Security, and just started my English Composition II class. Our main project in this class is to write a paper on a controversial subject. I asked if I could write on the controversy of Openly carrying a firearm, and was told that I could as long as I presented both sides (it has to be a controversy), and made sure to state where I stand on it, and whether or not my research changed my stance.

What I am asking for here are places that I can go for verifiable information that is pro open carry, I just ordered Ayoob's book ( I was told that it was an excellant source), and it's not hard to find info that is anti-carry. I am only allowed to use a couple of interviews so I am not asking for any input from people on this forum (sorry), but am asking for links, or titles of books that I should research. I am looking forward to writing this paper.

Thanks in advance for any info that is provided :).

EDIT -- When I told my wife what I wanted to write my paper on, she told me that it would not be approved by the teacher. Then I got approval in lees than an hour after sending my "topic approval" email.

I have the gunfacts.info, but have not heard of Dr. John R. Lott Jr. I will check him out from the library (hopefully), as I can't afford to buy a ton of books, I'm hoping to find what is reccomended here at the library :)

I have seen on here where several people post sayings from the founding fathers; is there a site or 2 to visit whereI can find some of these, or do I need to continue googling various keywords to find them??

Hmm, just discovered that my instructor is a gun owner that believes in necessary gun control laws :( Oh, and she also claims to be a 2nd or 3rd cousin to Obama, and claims that she "knows that he is not going to attempt to take guns away". hmmm Would be nice if she was right, but thats not how I am interpreting things.

Enter http://en.wikiquote.org Wikiquotes with the name to read their best known sourced and un-sourced and mis-attributed quotes.

Try for instance "Ben Franklin" http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Ben_Franklin

To see
  • They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
    • This was written by Franklin, with quotation marks but almost certainly his original thought, sometime shortly before February 17, 1775 as part of his notes for a proposition at the Pennsylvania Assembly, as published in Memoirs of the life and writings of Benjamin Franklin (1818). A variant of this was published as:
      • Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
        • This was used as a motto on the title page of An Historical Review of the Constitution and Government of Pennsylvania. (1759); the book was published by Franklin; its author was Richard Jackson, but Franklin did claim responsibility for some small excerpts that were used in it.
    • An earlier variant by Franklin in Poor Richard's Almanack (1738): "Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power."
    • The saying has also appeared in many paraphrased forms:
      • They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither.
He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security.

      • He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.
People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.
If we restrict liberty to attain security we will lose them both.
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.
He who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither.
Those who would trade in their freedom for their protection deserve neither.
Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security.
I would neither use nor attribute this to Franklin in a scholarly work, if only for the suggestion of doubt.

While the sources you have been provided are generally pro firearms, there have been very few written on the subject of open carry. Open carry (OC) is controversial even in the pro gun community and most of the websites, forums and one line stuff except this site will generally recommend against OC.

Look for some of Jeff Cooper's books like "To Ride, Shoot Straight & Speak the Truth" You might look at the Virginia Citizens Defense League for additional info as well.

For Anti citizen carry views you could try www.Officer.com a Law Enforcement site where citizen carry of firearms is not looked on in a generally good light and OC is frowned on.

Good luck.

I have seen it posted in several places that the Supreme Court decided that the police had no obligation to protect the public, that it was the individuals job to protect himself and family.

I have googled endlessly now, and maybe I am not using the correct keywords but I cannot find this.

Does anyone have a link, or even a better idea for me on how to find it? I appreciate al the posts and PM's I have recieved helping me out here.

If I understand correctly, you are looking for sources that are PRO OC. That's a tall order considering that this orgnization and it's forums is about the only real pro OC source in the country. Most of the pro-gun organizations tend to ignore OC, or appear to act as though it doesn't exist. Even the anti-gun groups rarely mention OC.

What a question. By the time you sort through all of what you have asked for, you will be more than able to teach an entire class on firearms alone:D

I have been collecting some links that I can use and pass on to others to further education on this subject. There is a LOT of information here. Some of it is mundane, some is redundant, but it is all useful. There are some really really good articles mixed in here, and they are in no particular order. Skim through them, find what is relevant and go from there. If you just try to read them one by one from the top down, you will likely get bored, quit, and not read further into what may be invaluable to you. I recommend you start with the one called http killogy/sheepdog. Keep them on your computer and go through them at your leisure, you will learn a lot here. I also recommend uscca ... United States Concealed Carry Association.

Same as they always have been. I carry openly at all times unless it's cold enough to wear my coat, and then it happens to be concealed. I am writing a research paper for my English class in college, I am not looking for information to make a decision, I am looking for sources that my Instructor will accept as credible so that I can write my paper with high hopes fornot only an 'A' but that I might help others in my class learn something useful.

I wouldn't dare come on here and try to cheat my paper;I gave my instructor the link to this forum because she thinks all is perfect in the world of Obama, and is a gun-owner. :)
