My wife has a Colt Army Special .38 double action with a 4 in or a 4.5 in barrel. It was made in Hartford Ct. It has patent numbers Aug 5, 1884, xxx,1900 and July 4, 1905. The only serial number? I can see is on the cylinder release, it says 713. No serial number on the barrel. There must be one of you out there who knows everything about every gun ever made. I'm just curious about the age and value, etc. of it. IT'S NOT FOR SALE.

Serial number is probably located on the frame underneath the grips. Take them off and have a look.

It's not under the grips and not on the frame under the cylinder. I am beginning to suspect it doesn't have one. Would that be possible for a military issue weapon. Btw, my wife bought it 45 yrs ago for $65.

According to WikiAnswers, itwas made during the middle 1920s. last serial # were around 540,000.
The serial # has to be someplace. I just took the grips off of a pistol my ex-wife's grandfather gave me 40 years ago and found the 2 digit serial number stamped on the handle.

Maybe the serial # was removed after being used in a crime. You should probably send it to me...so I can hide it for you.

I got some info from a 2 year old thread on thehighroad.org: Depending on the condition, it could be worth $175 to $500.

woooot woooot, I found it.:celebrate It's on the bottom of the grip#540,000 :cuss:(actually, my wife found it)

It has a patina, but it's not pitted at all. I saw some similar that went for $350 and $375.

I suppose the #713 on the cylinder release a part number?

So I guess you don't want me to hide it for you.:D You might want to edit out the serial # in your post. For security reasons, so someone else wont report it stolen.
