Firearms Policy at the SHOT Show

A new facility for the show warrants an explanation of firearms carry and storage

This year, for the first time, the SHOT Show is in a mixed-use facility as opposed to a stand-alone convention center. It is attached to areas that contain casinos and some of the most fabulous restaurants in the world. In view of this, we want to make sure for your convenience that you understand the rules and know about the convenient storage locations we have at the SHOT Show.

The Venetian Hotel Casino and Palazzo Resort Hotel Casinos are private property, and the possession or display of firearms is prohibited except in approved locations. Persons other than on-duty law enforcement officers are not allowed to possess firearms while on private property. If a firearm is being transported through the hotel or casino to one of the approved and designated storage locations or to an approved exhibition location, the firearms must be unloaded, firing pin removed and secured in a locked case or container. Firearms may not be stored on property (including hotel suites) prior to or at the conclusion of the show except in approved and designated storage locations for the SHOT Show.

Secured storage will be located in the SHOT Show Command Post in Sands Level 1 Meeting Room 301, open, for your convenience, 24 hours a day beginning on Jan. 13 at 7 a.m.

You are welcome to check your locked gun cases at no charge. This secured storage room will remain open 24 hours a day through the event. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our security office at 702-691-8522.

Satellite locations also offering secured storage around the clock, and their opening days, are as follows:

Level 1:

End of 300 Aisle (opens on Jan. 17 at 7 a.m.)
Level 2:

Hall A, end of 10,000 Aisle (opens on Jan. 13 at 7 a.m.)
Hall D, front of 16,000 Aisle (opens on Jan. 16 at 7 a.m.)
Bassano 2801-2802 (opens on Jan. 17 at 7 a.m.)

Unloaded AND firing pins removed. Fabulous.

Well, private property is private property...just conceal and ignore.

It makes me curious why, especially in this economy, a GUN-related show would so willingly sign up for a convention at an ANTI-GUN location when there are likely more gun-friendly locations to host the show?

Well, in general, it seems to be pretty much OK. The firing pin thing ain't gonna happen, of course. But, otherwise,it's just the policy for the venue. What do you think is wrong with it, jriera?

So, you mean just ignore the policy? What if they make entry conditional on compliance? What if they ask you if you are in compliance?

What if they have some means of testing for violations?

That's a good question. There had to be some reason. Possibly, the show got a good deal.

So much for any future plans of staying at these hotels. If I can't keep my self defense weapon in the room with me, then I will not give them any of my money.

I'd rather be banned from that hotel forever then to get killed obeying such laws personally...

Precisely. Ignore their policy. Unless you sign something, lie to them about being armed. To danger's point, I'd rather be banned forever than be a disarmed victim. If you have to sign something saying you won't bring guns to the gun show, I suppose there'd be some legal standing you were trespassing, in which case, I'd reconsider whether a gun show which bans guns is an appropriate way to spend my time and money.

And to "test" for violations would mean installing metal detectors on the entry doors and/or hallways connecting to the elevators for their hotel suites - doesn't exactly go with the decor. I'm not sure most guests would appreciate such intrusion either, so it's unlikely they'll do such a thing.

Tim, you won't be alone in ignoring them. Those casinos are my customers (most of the big Strip casinos are), and I've never set foot in their building unarmed. I've even discussed guns with some of the security/slots guys that escort me while I work, and if they ask if I'm carrying (only a few have), I tell the truth. "My company has a no weapons policy. If I did carry on the job and it got back to my boss, I'd get fired." So far, no one has called me on not actually answering the question, so I haven't had to lie (yet). One did give me that look that said he caught the side-step, and wasn't going to out me.

I even talked with a security officer at one casino that told me she was planning on carrying her airweight revolver (she had just picked it up that day) as soon as she got her CCW, despite her company's policy against it. She even asked me for recommendations for CCW instructors and holsters.

From all the conversations I've had with dozens of casino security officers and slot bosses all over the Strip, I'd say most are pro or neutral towards CCW on casino property, but it's their job to enforce the casino's policy. Even the few that said they don't like it recognize there's not really anything they can do about it if they don't know it's there.

But you might comply with their policy if you wanted to get in badly? Under what circumstances would you go along with the plan, t343?

Well, I think there are probably three contexts: the hotel, the casino and the convention center. I would agree that testing/controlling in the hotel is a non-starter. But the casino and the convention center, well, that could be controlled if they had a mind to do it.

I would never obey a gun ban unless I was required to under law - such as a courthouse, airport, post office, etc. If guns are banned, I stay away.

To that end, if I was attending the show, I would refuse to sign anything promising not to carry firearms, and if denied entry, call my credit card company, demand a refund of the convention fees, and send a letter to the convention organizers explaining why.

I was there with an Exhibitor, was told of the firing pin thing, but the "encased" thing is BS, how else will an Exhibitor show a gun? They had little blue zip ties around the trigger guard, so there must have been an exception to the Show area.

" Well, private property is private property...just conceal and ignore."

Exactly. I did.

I was told the Casino areas were off limits, but dont recall anything in NRS about it, and nothing was posted in the entry from the garages or at the Casinos. WTH, they are there to rob YOU.:banghead:

And whats this "private property" stuff? Here in WA that is not a valid argument if the place is open to the Public at the time of entry.

It was fascinating to watch the Venetian security (rent a kid with a radio) and even the PD take a couple steps back when the Show crowd came through, Id bet that 80% were packing. A well placed local said "half of LV is packing concealed"

I scared the living crap out of a LVPD who was hiding in an alcove behind Circus Circus, we (ex spec ops and myself) were parked beside the alcove with an entry door, I knew it was there and made sure to have my head turned in 'situational ready' as I passed in front of the opening just in case some putz was hiding out there to rob someone, without as much as the sound of a footstep of course. Tac light in hand ready to loosen a few teeth if necessary. . He sort of jumped when he realized I had the drop on him. I just nodded and spoke a "hello" to him... heh heh :what:

Nicest crowd one could ever want to meet.

PS I saw an OCer on the second floor. I saw other things on other floors that I cant talk about in a family friendly forum. Yum.

I was there too (thanks again Greg). There is nolegal limitation on concealed carry at this venue or any of the associated buildings. Their"policy" is their business and I could care less, concealed is concealed and I carried my legal firearm legally. No one knew nothing.

This is different from where they had this show last yearas the Las Vegas Convention Center is a "public building" as defined. It is posted as required and it is not legal to carry concealed there.

The last gun show I went to asked for loaded guns to be unloaded and have a wire tie put through the barrel. They had no metal detector or a wand, so I went in with my loaded concealed firearm.

If they put in a metal detector in then I will just take my business to the local gun shop.
