All, my girlfriend is getting ready to move up to Spokane for the next 4 yrs with the Air Force and is looking for some nice places to live with in reasonable commuting distance from the base. Can I get some advice from the locals as to good places for a woman to be living alone with a dog that aren't in the creepy parts of town seen on Cops?

Thanks in advance, maybe I can make a Spokane meeting now.

Cheney or Medical Lake are probably going to be her best bets. Lots of new housing in Airway Heights. It' the closest to Fairchild but it's also home to the Airway Heights Corrections Center which makes it iffy in my book. Stay away from Hillyard, Liberty Park, the low South Hill, and "Felony Flats" - - the area just west of the County Courthouse/Public Safety Building/County Jail complex.

The Spokane PD has a crime mapping tool where you can check out an address within the city limits: http://www.spokanegis.org/crimemap/default.asp

Airway heights does have some nice new housing developments built so close to the air force base for good reason.... But Airway heights in general is rather "Meth Makerish". If she wants to be living in Spokane with a short commute say 10-15 minutes depending on location... The South Hill in Spokane would be her best bet. I work up near the base and couldn't be happier with my choice of location.

There is a brand new apt complex in Medical Lake. There are also quite a few houses for rent/sale in the Fox Hollow area of Medical Lake. Pets are probably handled on a case by case basis.

There are tons of families, active duty and retired military living there, me included. It is around the corner from FAFB, takes about 15 minutes to get there. For any shopping there is a small grocery store, but I use the commissary for most of my stuff. If I need to I go to Airway Heights for WalMart.

It takes me about 25-30 minutes to get to the Spokane Valley mall from Medical Lake. There are lots of restaurants and stores in that area.

Medical Lake also has a nice path around the lake for recreation.

I am sure that there are parts of Medical Lake that is methish, but I haven't seen them. I generally stay close to home or do my shopping elsewhere.

The new apartment complex in Airway Heights is great. Located on Hayford just down from the casino and right behind the Wally World shopping center.

Have friends who share a 2 bedroom there. The apartments are large. You can get a garage for parking. Has a pool and a gym.

Literally just walk to the Wally World for groceries or whatever you need. You are on the East side of Airway Heights. Less then 10 minutes from both downtown Spokane and the base (about 3-4 miles from base and 6-7 miles from downtown).

The name is Cedar Summits. Link: http://www.cedarpropertymgmt.com/complexes/summit/summitpix.htm

Link has photos of the area and links to the apartment floor plans at bottom.

Edit: Might need to cancel this one, didn't read the part about the dog. Don't think they allow pets.
