ROSEVILLE, Calif. - A driver whose SUV plunged into a Northern California creek after he was startled by his hands-free cell phone device escaped the sinking vehicle by blasting out the window with a handgun.

The 28-year-old man, whose name wasn't immediately available, is an armed security guard at Thunder Valley Casino, north of Sacramento. He sustained minor injuries in Sunday's accident.

A spokesman for the Roseville Fire Department said the man was traveling northbound on Industrial Avenue in Roseville when the cell phone device activated. The driver was startled and veered off the road through the guardrail. The SUV landed in Pleasant Grove Creek.

He used his gun to shoot himself out, then flagged down a passerby.

maybe i'm missing something, but if this guy was actually startled enough by his cell phone to cause him to drive off the road, i hate to say it, but maybe he shouldn't be carrying. of course, i think it's much more likely that he was trying to do something with his cell, like use gps or send a text.

back to the main point of the post, i suppose that's one use for a firearm, although he probably would have had just as much luck using his handgun as a hammer to break the window.:cool::cool:

There is anecdotal evidence that using a firearm as a hammer on anything, is not a good idea. I would probably discharge the firearm as the fellow in the story did, under similar circumstances, though you wouldnt see me startled to the point of losing control of a moving vehicle by a cellphone.

On the television myth-busters did an issue about a car underwater and showed that unless the pressure was equalized that you cannot roll down the window even if half of the window is exposed. It was enlightening. I had always wondered about that, the surprising thing was that manually you cannot roll the window down but the electric windows could roll down.

I don't think he should be driving if a cell phone can startle him to the extent that he 'ditches' his car.

Definitely going to be some loss of hearing. I would never want to be in a situation where I had to discharge a firearm in an enclosed vehicle.

That may be, but I trust myself - at least in this situation - to completely empty all the cartridges from the gun before using it as a hammer. I would at least try that before discharging it in a car and blowing out my eardrums. Obviously, when it's not necessary, using a firearm as a hammer is a bad idea, but given the circumstances, I think it would be worth the risk.

On the television myth-busters did an issue about a car underwater and showed that unless the pressure was equalized that you cannot roll down the window even if half of the window is exposed. It was enlightening. I had always wondered about that, the surprising thing was that manually you cannot roll the window down but the electric windows could roll down.

While I haven't seen that particular episode of mythbusters, I would caution against trusting your life or well-being to them in any way. Many of their tests tend to be unscientific, and they very often ignore variables which could alter their results significantly. That being said, I enjoy the show quite a bit, and I like that they at least try.

His hands-free was probably through the radio, and the volume was up really high from when he was listening to music last.
