Tell your reps NOT to co-sponsor HR 2324

North Carolinians Against Gun Violence, our local gun control group, is pushing for co-sponsors for HR 2324, legislation that would close the so-called "gun show loophole." It would basically require background checks for all private sales at gun shows.

Aside from being unconstitutional, this legislation is just plain ineffective. Criminals will acquire guns whether there are additional restrictions in place or not. Statistically, next to none of the firearms purchased at guns shows are subsequently used in crimes. This legislation just serves to make it even more difficult for law-abiding citizens to buy and sell firearms.

NCGV is pushing Rep. Watt and Rep. Miller to become co-sponsors on this bill. (Rep. Price is already a co-sponsor... big surprise.) Let's push back by contacting these legislators and telling them NOT to sponsor this bad legislation. We don't need MORE gun laws on the books, we need to enforce the ones we already have. It's a quick call...

Oh man, Mel Watt is my representative, I'M ON IT! And thanks.

Sent my letter in via Watt's congressional website, I will send a follow up physicalletter and email.

It is funny, that a republican introduced this bill. It does masquerade as reform when in fact it will shut down and destroy one of the best parts about gun shows.

I got a response from Rep. Mel Watt's office. Apparently they read the letter... oh screw it, I'll just their response I don't have the text for my letter with me, it is at work, I'll post tomorrow sometime:

Thank you for your email dated January 19, 2010 regarding your concerns with HR 2324. Congressman Watt is aware of your concerns and thanks you for input regarding this important issue. Unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts, I could not find a time to schedule a meeting between you and Congressman Watt when he would be available to meet in Greensboro. However, he is aware of your concerns and will definitely take them in consideration.

Again, thank you for your email correspondence. If there is anything else that our office could assist you with, please do not hesitate to let me know.
