I was in Lakewood Wal-Mart yesterday with my youth pastor. I was CC with a bladetech IWB holster and decided to take my sweatshirt off once inside since it was stuffy. Went all around the electronics department and got a wired xbox 360 controller for use on my PC with various console emulators, and even did some grocery shopping.
While at the self checkout the guy who supervises it came up to me and said that Wal-Mart's policy prohibits weapons in stores. I asked for a copy of the policy and he said he couldn't get one, but he just knows they're not allowed because of the shooting and because it's a bad area. I told him that's the exact reason I even carry in the first place, and requested to speak with a manager about the issue, citing that there have been several emails from people on this board and the response has always been that Wal-Mart's policy is to follow state law. He said I was wrong, citing that he works there, and even he's not allowed to carry. I told him that's because he's an employee, and it's the same with employees at my place of work, but it doesn't apply to customers.
Eventually a manager came up and asked what was going on, I told him that the guy claims that firearms are prohibited in Wal-Mart, but I happen to know that their policy is to follow state law. So he asked me if I had a carry permit, to which I replied that I only need one for concealed carry, and to have a loaded pistol in a vehicle, and I do have one so I can carry in my car. I also pointed out that open carry is legal in this state (and ironically, illegal in Texas) since it's not prohibited by law. He basically shrugged, gave a "hmm, well, I don't know what the laws are but I'll look into it." I told him about opencarry.org and told him it would be a great place to start his research.
I'm currently writing an email to them asking them to let the Lakewood store know what corporate policy actually is. I'm using my Blackhawk Serpa next time I go in.
Anyone willing to link me to other emails from Wally World? I'm coming down with a bad case of laziness.
