i have a cousin that works at dillards at the lynhaven mall in virginia beach...

a few months back a man INSIDE the store, during business hours attempted to physically and sexually assault her.

said perp only got 30 days in jail, and gets out soon, and he had a prior record of this.

my question is...would anybody be willing to talk with her about carrying?

weknow very little of virginia firearmlaws,or else we would do it ourselves, but the family(at least not the liberal ones) is wanting to suggest CC,and OC until she gets a carry permit.

she has a young son,so points about it being smarter to protect him,and that always carrying will keep it out of his hands would be smart.

perhaps offering range time to her,to help make a decision.

anybody interested?

I would think one of the OC women would be best to talk to her but if no one else volunteers I am willing to talk to anyone. :)

Since she works at the mall she will probably be breaking her employee agreement if she decides to CC at work. If she OC's at work they would escort her out. If she is caught CC-ing she could lose her job. For us customers the worst that could happen is they could ask us to leave, charge us with trespassing if we don't leave, and ban us from the mall. What about a Taser &/or pepper spray? Not sure if that breaks any employee agreements.

If she decides to go forward with getting a gun, she should probably shoot one before taking the CHP class since there is a shooting element to the class. I would suggest some range time, trying different guns. Once she knows what gun she likes and can take the CHP class, she can be ready to defend herself. Bob's gunshop in Norfolk and Superior Pawn on VA Beach Blvd both have ranges and guns for sale.

Bob's says it charges $5 for range guns.

Superior Pawn I believe has rental guns but don't see it in the web page. I know they told me I could rent a KRISS a while back.

Isn't A&P Arms (with their indoor range) right across the street from Lynnhaven mall?

I am not near Va. Beach so I can't offer any hands-on help, but I can give an opinion.

First, I agree with 45acpforme that guidance from another woman would be taken more seriously than a brother's or other man's advice.

Unless your sister has significant firearms experience I suggest she acquire some training, and spend some time thinking about the responsibilities inherent in carrying a deadly weapon to defend oneself. Running out and buying a pistol, and then just sticking it in her purse is not going to keep her safe. Going to the range a few times a year isn't going to make it much better. She must know when and how to use it, and be mentally prepared to do so.

I also agree that a non-lethal defense aid may be the first thing to consider, perhaps something like the Kimber pepper spray. Consider purchasing this for her, and giving it to her with guidance on where to seek information on more effective defense measures.

The mental aspect is the most critical. In addition to acquiring a reliable self-defense implement she may want to look into something like http://www.rad-systems.com/ to compliment her overall strategy. My wife has taken several RAD courses and recommends them highly. They do not teach firearms defense, but they don't preach against it like some self-defense-for-women courses do (this probably varies by program and trainer, but it is the case even in ultra-liberal Falls Church). They actually do force-on-force training, it is not just classroom sessions.

Pointing her to this forum and other on-line resources wouldn't hurt either. Besides, we need more women here, a lot more women!:)

Yes it is.  I rarely go down there so I didn't know about it.

Pics or it never happened.

I definitely recommend the OP's sister some defensive training, whether it be with firearms or unarmed defense (or preferably, both).Whatever she can get away with (without losing her job). Malls are notorious for assaults, I understand - all those unarmed people running around, after all.

In the meantime, since this weirdo will be on the loose again soon, she needs to take the standard precautions - never be alone in the parking lot, heightened awareness, etc.

Women on Target sponsored ladies only shooting clinic.

The goal of NRA’s Women On Target program is to introduce women to the shooting sports in a fun, safe, nonintimidating environment and provide them the opportunity to meet other women with similar interests.

Next one at Airfield Shooting Club 22 May in Wakefield Va.

OK, OK, sister, cousin, so I can't read. Or maybe I was thinking that up there in Lansing she might be both! (I went to school in Ann Arbor {which explains the can't read part}.)

For those who haven't ever been in MI, folks in AA think that Lansing, and especially E. Lansing, is actually in the yoo pee, somewhere on the other side of Canada.

(Where's the tongue-in-cheek smiley?)

That just means she can't take the taser to MI - she can certainly have one in VA. Buy a small safe of some sort (not necessarily a gun safe), and stick the taser in it at home when she leaves for MI. Resume carry upon return to VA. Piece of cake.

the handgun can be carried in MI,as we recognize all out of state permits, and i feel that you should be able to defend yourself when on vacation too.

helped with the pit crew stuff with my cousin down to dixieland speedway in elizabeth city NC too.

I'd like to help, but I can't convince my wife to carry. I did convince her to carry the Kimber PepperBlaster. You may want to look at that for her to carry for the short term. Good Luck.

I would, and I'd be willing to talk to her about suing the bad guy civilly, as well, though I, myself do not normally do plaintiff's cases, and wouldn't be up for travel to Va. Beach for that. But I could provide some general information. My email's listed in the user profile.

It took me years to get my wife to carry, but I am happy to report that she now carries concealed. I know we are open carry, but it's a start.

Unless there is a prohibition of keeping weapons locked in vehicles in parking lots, she could leave a handgun locked in her jeep. Since she gets escorted to her jeep, she could arm up when she gets to it.

She might be able to talk to her employer about carrying until she gets to work, leaving her firearm secured somewhere in the store until she gets ready to leave after work.

Have you spoke to her about this? Is she actually looking for help?

my aunt/her mom has stated that she spoke about it with her,but she knows nothing of actual virginia firearm laws or now the carry process goes, plus she has a tendency to say she did something, when she hadnt actually gotten around to it yet,and then continually puts it off.

but i feel she would be interested in it,and if not,the worst she can do is say no.
