Yes, in Utah you can carry a gun in School Zones if you have a CCW permit, but this is still an example why the Federal GFSZ laws are just plain stupid... its not going to stop the criminals...

SALT LAKE COUNTY -- SALT LAKE CITY -- A 34-year-old teacher was gunned down Friday afternoon outside a Salt Lake County Head Start school.

Police originally believed it may have been a random shooting, but Friday night they learned the women knew each other, and the shooter had gone to the school to confront her victim.

Just after 3 p.m., Unified police say 34-year-old Tetyana Nikitina finished up a training class at a Salt Lake Head Start school near 300 East and 3900 South. After she got into her car, investigators say 70-year-old Mary "Nance" Hanson started shooting at her.

"It appears there were multiple rounds fired, and she had ammunition to reload," said Unified police Lt. Don Hutson.

Co-workers and others who heard the shots immediately called 911. Then, dispatchers received another disturbing call.

"As we were responding, we actually received a call from a woman who identified herself as the suspect, someone [who] had just shot a woman," Hutson said. "When questioned about why she shot the woman, she said, ‘I don't know, and that's all I'm going to say.'"

Police said this was not a random act -- Hanson knew Nikitina and targeted her. Investigators are not going into detail on the connection between the two but said it was not through the school.

Hanson was booked into jail on homicide charges, and thus far has said little to detectives.

"It's very bizarre," Hutson said.

Officials at the school describe Nikitina as patient, genuine and sweet. Originally from the Ukraine, she had two kids, ages 7 and 9, and was working at Head Start as an assistant teacher.

Co-workers say Nikitina was working toward a degree in early childhood development with the hope of one day being a lead teacher -- a dream stopped short outside her own school.

Head Start officials said they've received several panicked phone calls Friday night. They want families to know that they will be contacting them over the weekend to set up home visits on Monday.

Head Start will also be providing mental health counseling for those who need it.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner!

Think about it. The parallel is too good (bad). Just as criminals don't obey gun laws, politicians in DC don't obey the constitution. They are not stupid, they are criminals!

Yep. Some are ignorant of our founding documents, most are criminal in their rush to further infringe upon our rights and our authority, and there are a few (more than a few?) who are sinister and evil in their intent.

The current Federal GFSZ is limited in scope to only firearms involved in interstate commerce.

IANAL, but in my reading of the SCOTUS case People v. Gonzales the SCOTUS struck down the original GFSZ because when the government failed to prove that mere possession of a firearm invoked the interstate commerce powers of the Congress.

Thus, it is my opinion that the Federal GFSZ can not be enforced against anyone unless they buying/selling the firearms, or conducting other activities where the possession of a firearm may effect interstate commerce (i.e. possession of a firearm when selling drugs).

This has to be a lie. Everybody knows that the law says you can't do that. It can't be true.

It's illegal to kill people. It's 'extra' illegal to kill people with guns. It's illegal to have a gun in that location.

So, that's 3 ways that we know this event is a lie and never happened. The law says it can't, so it must not have.

I haven't seen a single publication that states that she was a CWP holder... only "comments" and "responses" where someone states that she had a CWP... imo, it could easily just be some anti-gunner trying to make CWP holders bad...

This seems like a probable theory. The media would be screaming it from the rooftops if the shooter actually had a CWP. They love to spread that kind of thing around. If it were true, we'd never hear the end of it.

Mother - in - law from hell
Records Show Nasty Divorce Dispute Preceded Murder When Tetyana Nikitana was shot to death recently as she left the school where she was a teacher, the suspect, according to police, was her former mother-in-law. Nikitian, 34, was a mother of two and an immigrant from the Ukraine living in Utah. According to the Deseret News, the suspect in the shooting is 70-year-old Mary Nance Hanson, the mother of Nikitana’s ex-husband, Dan Jankowski. Police stated that Jankowski was not a suspect in the case, nor was a he a person of interest.

“He is just a relative of the suspect,” said Lt. Don Hutson told the Deseret News Police are still hoping to piece together the case, and determine the motives that Hanson may have had for such a gruesome act. Hanson was the one who called 911 after the shooting. A study of the divorce record between Nikitana and Jankowski revealed the couple’s tumultuous divorce after six years of marriage, filled with fear and animosity.

In those records, starting in 2005, Nikitana stated that she feared for her life and those of her children at the hands of her husband. Jankowski, on the other hand, filed a large volume of divorce records the belief that his then-wife was attempting to frame him with domestic abuse.

He was also very concerned that Nikitana would leave the country with the couple’s two children. That fear led to a dispute over the children’s passports. There were hundreds of pages of divorce records filed by the couple. The records covered the more typical issues that arise in a divorce, like child custody and finances, but, according to the Deseret News, disputes seemed to range into less conventional territory.

There were arguments over playground equipment, gold crosses for the kids, wooden plates. There were also much more serious issues, including suggestions of child neglect, threats and domestic violence. The divorce was filed in 2005, yet the dispute was still going on through December of 2009.

Police obtained a warrant to search the home shared by Hanson and Jankowski. In an interview with KSL in Salt Lake City, Jankowski said that he did not know why his mother would want to kill his ex-wife, and that he had had concerns about the state of her mental health in the past. Jankowski also spent a large amount of time, even hours, talking to police. “I had no idea she was going to do anything like this,” Jankowski said about his mother, Mary Hanson.

Jankowski and Nikitana got a bifurcated divorce in early January of 2006, which meant that the union was dissolved but that they still had to figure out certain legal decisions. In August 2005 and January 2006, Nikitana tried to get protective orders against her husband, claiming, according to the Deseret News, that “her husband forcefully picked her up and threw her onto the floor in front of the children, leaving bruises and red finger marks.”

Jankowski firmly denied these allegations.

Nikitana had faced scrutiny from the Division of Children and Family Services when, in 2003, she faced a charge that she had left her children in a car alone while she went to a beauty salon. The case was resolved after DCFS visited their home and found it clean and the children healthy.
