Rapid City Cabelas/Scheels

Have any of you OC'd in Cabelas or Scheels? Your experience? Scheels has a statement on their door which seems to me to permit lawful CC but not OC. I'm unclear on Cabelas' stance.

I shop at the Rapid City Cabelas regularly. I generally carry concealed but have opened my jacket at the gun counter when discussing holsters, magazines or other accessories with the sales people and never had a problem with them at all.

The sign at Cabelas does not apply to concealed carry with a valid permit. The sign I saw actually had small print making an exception for concealed carry with a permit.

i was shopping for holsters in the rapid city scheels today, carrying concealed in a IWB. an associate came up and asked if my firestar 45 was loaded. when i told him it was he informed me that store policy was it had to be unloaded and checked at the front of the store. he then asked me to unload it, which i did. he then asked me to surrender my gun, which i did not. i said "i'm leaving anyways," at which point i did, with him in tow all the way to the door.

not sure if that is actually store policy, but i reckon scheels is going to get an email from me, and not get anymore business from me...

Did you unholster in the store while shopping for holsters? did you unholster and unload in the store when asked?

NEVER unholster in public except to defend yourself! If asked a preposterous question like this simply excuse yourself and leave. Why would an associate (not a manager) ask you to surrender your firearm?

In my experience Cabela's is OC/CC friendly.

I shop Cabellas regularly and always CC. I have shopped for holsters there and have opened my jacket on several occasions while discussing holster purchases. I have informed the counter people I am armed several times and have never had anyone say anything about me leaving.

However, I have never, never removed my firearm from my hip. I have had them pull one of the same model firearm out of the case to see how it fits in the holster I was considering.

I would be interested in hearing more detail about exactly what took place for them to escort you out of the store. There must be more to this account or you have a counter guy who misunderstands store policy.

i did unholster to see which holster would fit. since it's a relatively rare pistol they didn't have any in the store, nor any holsters made specifically for it, so it's been a bit of trial and error finding one. when i bought my IWB at the same store several weeks ago i did the same thing, with a different associate standing right there helping me. same story at cabelas and first stop gun. they've been nothing but helpful (while, alas, having nothing in stock that fit...)

When I shop for a holster, that firearm is unloaded and in a case. Or I would purchase the holster and try it at home. I would say that that associate and you errored in handling this situation. Please never unholster a loaded handgun in a public setting. At least excuse yourself back to your car to unload/unholster.

(that is why I have a BUG)

i oc in cabellas and had no issues haven in scheels but i did at rooster and and gas stations what not havnt had a problem yet been open caryin for almost a month and no issues yet i hope it stays that way
