Hello everyone at Opencarry,

On behalf of Canada I'd like to thank you and your forefathers for coming to the irrefutable conclusion that ultimately, Armed Citizens = Free Citizens.

I've been studying the US Constitution for the past three years and also the Bill of Rights. I support open carrying and also gun ownership with no restrictions at all, as intended.

In Canada I'm sorry to say as many of you probably know there is very restrictive gun laws, and I find that many guns here are extremely overpriced. A gun owner myself, I bought my first gun, a AR15 for $1,650.

After awhile I began looking at USA Gunstores online and realized that I could have bought a brand new near top of the line AR15 for around $700-900 in the states, which in Canadian dollars would be around $800-1000.

I attempt to talk to people close to me and those I am acquainted with about the right of self defense, gun ownership, and ability and (what I think) every Canadians right to carry a weapon on them for personal safety... Unfortunately a vast majority in Canada fail to see the reason of owning weapons and look at me like I'm crazy when I bring it up.

When I bring up the US system and the reasons the founding fathers recognized and armed populace was the ultimate check and balance, people I am talking to tell me that doesn't matter, and that "That was 200 years ago". A common one is to tell me "If I like the U.S. so much I should get the f**** out and go live there". I can only shake my head.

I am saddened that in Canada we are still a monarchy. In December 2008 the Governor General (The Queens Representative in Canada) suspended parliament for one month following some political battles that threatened the political party in power. Many Canadians I know claim to be "Safer than the U.S." and "Free'er than the US" when the very system of government we live under will under is not free.

My ultimate wish is to break free of the chains of the English Monarch and to see the emergence of a Republic of Canada.

Anyways, enough of my babbling. Hello and I look forward to talking with you all.:dude:

Welcome to OCDO.

Although I pray for our brothers and sisters in Canada, and hope that they may someday be free, I actually agree with your friends. You should come here and become a US citizen. If gun rights are something you are seriously interested in, the USA is one of th elast bastions of firearms freedom on the planet. Canada is a colony of Breat Britain, and as such, will remain hostile to an armed citizenry until they sever their ties completely with the Crown like we did...

Enjoy that AR while you can. From the looks of things, Canada is going to move toward British-style policies of absolute disarmament in the next few years...

Stay safe.

Welcome to OCDO JohnAlexander - great screen/user name - shared with the first prime minister of Canada.

Many of us in this country look on you as our brothers from up north. We share a common heritage. I spent many summers in my youth in the Canadian woods (lake country) just above Minnesota - it is truly God's country to me.

Two things I can't grasp - socialized medicine and the stance on self-defense and firearms. It will take no small miracle to improve either situation.

Hope you enjoy your stay here and hope to hear more from you.

Yata hey

WhatI find most aggrivating about Canada is the attitude that grizzly and black bears, moose, and mt lions, never kill anyone. Oh wait, any rural Canadian or anyone who enjoys hunting or wilderness fishing knows this, it must be the city dwellers who can't grasp it. OOOOOHHH Vancouver Island- full of durrrr!

Ok so are your big wild critters different than those in the US? Esp Alaska, where people walk around on city edges as well as the backcountry with big bore wheelguns not for some meth tweaker, but for those rogue bears primarily. Are most Canadians like the dingalings in CA who first banned mt lion hunting, then don't open carry when hiking in some national forest, where there are too many mt lions roaming around? And lastly, have the majority of Canadians ever thought of hunting with handguns? I mean isn't Canada big on hunting?I saw a show about bear attacks, in a few cases the hunters (after moose or something, not bears)couldn't even get their rifles up the bears charged them so quickly. Here is where a handgun can come in handy, the bear can be right on you and you can possibly manage to draw the ( hopefully big bore wheelgun) gun and shoot the bear through the chin at the proper angle, even while pinned to the ground.

I am aware that the violent crime rate in Canada is alot lower in most places, including cities, but I hear that Toronto has a quite a gang and drug problem these days, soI would assume all big cities in Canada also have the same problem. Urban people would be less likley to see the need to carry than if you asked some hunting guides about it.

Well my Province/State (Alberta) has the fortunate thing of often being referred to as "The Texas of the North". Cowboys, hunting, rodeos, and guns are a big thing here, more so in any other province.

Anyone i've ever known that has done some serious Rocky Mountain/Forest hiking in the middle of nowhere always brings high powered hunting rifles along, just in case. There aren't a lot of Grizzly bears on the East side of the Rockies where alberta is, but in BC there are loads.

A handgun is always.. handy... too =p. We have a lot of wolves, coyotes, and even beavers in thevery rural areas. Don't be so surprised! Beavers are vicious little things that are the size of medium sized dogs sometimes.

Canada is big on Hunting, correct. I wouldn't know about Toronto at all.. I don't want to just speculate.

Yeah I don't mean to generalize but the city of Vancouver and Vancouver is kind of full of.. higher class rich spoiled uptight people. Cool place to visit but living there would get very annoying after awhile.

Edit: Oh also we have much lower violent crime rates because of the population density. Canadian cities population wise are not that packed. I live in Edmonton which is the provincial capital and there is only around 900,000 people living here, with maybe 1,150,000 if you count the surrounding municipalities.

The province of Alberta itself only has around 6 million inhabitants. Texas has around 24 million for population.. and it is much smaller than Alberta. Of course the crime rate will be lower... theres barely anyone within miles of eachother!

I do want to live in the U.S.! I am thinking about living in Montana. It is right below my province, the terrain is the same and the low population is to my liking (like 900,000 for the entire state or something).

When I have the funds available I definitely will =)

Yea!!! Come on over! In fact, we'll send over one of our antis to make it an even exchange.

Also, just like sonorarebel said. I like the way you think. No offense to Canadians, but I didn't think that kind of thinking existed up there. Welcom to ocdo. Please wipe your shoes at the door. :)

USE IT!?!? They can have it. We haven't used it in over 150 years, so we obviouslydon't need it anymore.

Great deal for Canada. Low mileage and a give away. Hell, it probably still has the original tires. May need a good dusting off though.

Welcome aboard neighbor. Now if only more Americans could see what you see. Here are some excellent readings for your research.

"That Every Man Be Armed" by Stephen Halbrook

"A Nation of Cowards" by Jeffrey Snyder (a paper)

"The Embarrassing Second Amendment" by Sanford Levinson (an essay)

I had one alive in a trap once. It clicked its teeth and slapped its tail. I hit it on the head and stunned it pretty good, then dunked its head under water. I'm not sure if the hit to the head killed it more so than drowning, as it was all over in a few minutes. Now the one animal I'd have a major problem with alive in a trap is the otter. The stupid local DNR officers have all told me specifically not to shoot it to dispatch it. Since they are often the ones who tag the pelts and since some of them are assholes, I will not shoot an otter for dispatch. IfI catch a bobcat ( closed season here), I'm leaving it and calling them and let them release it LOL!

A few years ago some people got attacked by a rabid beaver at a resevoir park. The same park has a big deer overpopulation too, so no doubt there are beavers all over there too- and raccoons. Anyway since MD is not a right to carry state, the people who were attacked were not given the option to carry a handgun, and therefore could only opt to beat the beaver off with a big stick. Now when I am trappingI can carry a handgun for dispatch, so if a rabid whatever comes at me while I am on foot, I can shoot it. I have had sick raccoon encounters before, the first time I was walking on a neighbors land with my dog, myself armed with a makeshift walking stick. A raccoon came bounding out towards us chittering away- at 2pm. My dog chased after it and the coon turned and ran off into brush. I called to the dog and he came back. The 2nd sick raccoon was just sitting in the front yard andI didn't see it till I was almost up on it. It growled at me and shuffled under some shubbery. I went and got the .22 and came back and it was still under there and growled at me again.I shot and killed it. This region has been having big rabies problems for decades. The main vectors are bats, skunks, raccoons, foxes, and groundhogs. At some point coyotes will be in greater #'s and no doubt they will get added to the main vector list.

Another animal to be wary of is a rutting whitetail buck. Now and then stupid people raise fawns illegally then let them free range, and when a male fawn grows up he has no fear of people. When he goes into rut, he can be very dangerous. However, even a fully wild buck can get crazy in rut and act aggressively towards a person. My mother kept hearing this snorting sound one day while doing gardening work in november. She thought it was our one dog that likes to sniff everything and snorts like a pig when he does it. When she was finished, she went to the garage and inside was the dog in question sound asleep. When she told me this I told her that was likley a rutting buck and she was lucky it didn't attack her. I still can't get her into guns though.

Living in MD is close to living in Canada, the state is run by socialist overlords for one, the gun laws aren't as bad as Canada, but "they" keep trying to make it so. The rural counties' reps act as a check and balance just enough to keep the socialist dam plugged, but so much damage has already been done.
