Lookin to get my CPL soon

Well tax time is upon us once again and I want to set aside enough money to get my cpl.

Few question's like where is a cheap place to take it and roughly what does it cost in total after you pay the state for your god given right?

any info on this would be appreciated

Can't suggest near by teachers, but I do know that the license costs 105 dollars plus passport grade photo. The class will cost 100 dollars on the low end, with 150-200 dollars being more likely after range fees, ammo costs, and the class itself.

Took my class in Monroe at a cost of $75. If your interested 734.731.6777. They also have a table at the Gibraltar Trade Center gin shows in Taylor.

If you want to drive to the western U.P., there's a guy here that does it for $50. He said he only charges enough to cover range fees, ammo, targets, paperwork ect.

I don't know how often he holds the classes though.

I would love to head north, but I can't afford it at the moment.

For some reason I t hough it would run a lot more then 200ish for the whole thing. This won't break me as much as I had thought, YAY.

When I got mine, I planned on $700ish for the whole deal (handgun, ammo, range time, fees...), and I figured about $450 for a handgun. I planned on waiting quite a while. Imagine my surprise when a friend of mine showed me a link to Hi-point. I walked out the door with a .45 auto for $170. That knocked nearly $300 off my estimate. I was geeked. Good luck.

Yea I own a hi-point 9mm compact, it was my first pistol actually and i love it.. But to save on funds for ammo I would probably just take my Walther p22 seeing how ammo is dirt cheap.

Exactly!

When you say the "THE WHOLE THING", what are you referring to?

When it's all said and done it can be pretty pricey. Here was my bill for what I consider "The Whole Thing".

CPL Class - $125

Ammo - Free (I was fortunate I didn't have to pay for that)

Range Time - $10

Glock 23 - $560 (after taxes)

SD Ammo - ($25)

Plinking Ammo ($300)

Application Fee - ($105)

Gas to drive to class in Rochester Hills - ($20)

Holster - ($35)

Total - $1180, and if you don't consider plinking ammo part of the "whole thing" - $880.

Those are some expense you want to keep in mind.

I already have a few pistols and some ammo, with what I have my breakdown should be something like this



Guns - already have them

Ammo - have 2k rounds for my .22 so that should be good (right?)

holster - already have it

cpl class - figure 150 just to be safe

range time - figure 30 just to be safe

gas - another 30 just to be safe

application fee - 120

So just to stay on the safe side I will put away $450 where I should be in the area of needing around$330.. when I say just to be safe I would rather have to much then not enough.

As for what gun I would cc and oc I would probably tank around my 9mm for the time being.

Reloaded 9mm para ammo, assuming you cast your own bullets and reuse your brass significantly, can actually be cheaper than .22lr ammo.

I would'nt recommend finding the cheapest CPL trainer. Find the best pay for the best you can find. Get the best training around.

It depends on how good with guns and gun laws someone is for how good of a CPL class they should try to find.

If someone is truly competent already, it probably won't matter much at all. Although, the good classes are really valuable for new shooters.

I am pretty versed in Michigan law's and can shoot fairly well, but a good refresher is never a bad thing. Can anyone recommend a good teacher around surrounding area of flint?

I would like to drive as little as possible as I drive a gas hog.

Mine was:

$50 - CPL class (everything included)

$0 - Gas. (my brother picked me up)

$5 - Photo

$105 - Fee turned in to the county.

Total $155

He's a retired (due to injury 12/25/03) USMC SSGT, former city LEO, NRA certified Range Safety Officer. Pistol & Rifle Instructor. Distinguished Pistol Expert, Assistant Police Firearms Instructor (Tactical Rifles, Pump Shotguns and Pistols) since 1994. US Marine marksmanship Instructor & Armorer of pistols and shoulder fired weapons since 1986. US Army Weapons Specialist - IFPO Certified Protection Officer.

Plus he offers free assistance with the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program in all firearm disciplines.

He doesn't believe that anyone should make money training people to use their 2nd Amendment rights.

My wife just took the class at Advanced Ranges in Burton. I put together a group of 12 people so we got a bit of a discount from their normal rates and paid $100/person (BTW, I think they offer discounts starting at groups of five). Their normal rate for the course and range time is $150 butthat also includes four hours of range time in addition to the time you will spend on the range during the course. This range time may be used before or after the actual class. I took my class from someone who I will not name and paid $110. There were tremendous differences in both the classroom portion and the range time for both.

I sat through a portion of my wife's class and found the material covered to be much more thorough. Additionally, the instructor is LE/military with a lot of real-world experience. Comparing the range times and instruction for the two courses isa joke. In my class I had only to put 30 rounds onto an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper. The instructor for my wife's class taught them the basics of proper stance, point shooting and a few different tactical movements. My time with gun-in-hand was about 2 minutes. My wife spent nearly 4 hours in the range at least half of which was shooting. If I knew about the additional range time and quality of instruction I would have paid the extra $40 and taken my CPL course from them as well.
